Hmmm... A message board devoted to a specific car that is biased towards that car. Fancy that.

Now if you prefer it to go the other way, why not start a NEW forum, called "The RX8 is merely okay and outperformed by other cars in the price range.com".

Can you tell me which car it is that outperforms the RX8 in EVERY performance category? Just two or three is fine, I don't feel like searching all over this board for the "real story" about how my car isn't very special... 'Cuz "The RX8 is merely okay and outperformed by other cars in the price range.com" isn't open yet.

Very nicely said jwitzer. The overall package is what will be getting me back into another 8.

I've got the opportunity to take my uncle's 7 and my engine/tranny and combine them. But I'd be putting a new engine in a 15 year old car. The sevens just don't have the styling I'm looking for and am comfortable with. Neither do the Evos or WRXs. Don't get me wrong, I love the WRX. If I was still in Wa state I'd be on the WRX club forum instead of on here. This is mainly due to lots of open trails and logging roads... :D

I've spent some time in an EVO recently, coming back from my wreck, and a trip up and back to take photos of the track (each way was a 2 hour trip). I experienced everything from open highway to serious stop and go, and it just kills the rear, back and neck. Probably more so with crash injuries. Overall it's a "rougher" car.

I'm a believer that form must equal function. Meaning power and style. For it's price, the 8 is nicely balanced between the two. On paper, meaning 0-60, 1/4 mi, whatever..., I'll quote Han Solo, "It may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts."

But all that is my .02

But the RX-8 needs more power to be taken seriously..
The RX8 is not "woefully lacking in power", nor does it need more power to be taken seriously. The car is what it is, which is fast enough and a stellar turning and stopping kinda car (funny how one poster equates the handling of the car to being some sort of lame trump card, but doesn't feel the same about 1/4 mile times). Again, I don't need 300bhp to feel good about my car, as at only 3000lbs it doesn't NEED 300bhp to be quick.

No car car that's in the ballpark price-wise can match the overall package.

That's an awesome domain name -- I better jump on it.

Look, I'm not trying to say the RX-8 isn't great. There is nothing out there that I would rather have for ~$30k. A car is more than just the numbers on a sheet of paper. But an Evo is going to go faster around a track, off the line, and through the slalom. The S2K and 350Z outperform in most categories as well.

This forum is great and I like hearing the excitement that people have. But there are people that come here looking for some quick answers and have to make their way through the enormous amount of information on this site. The more balanced and realistic in the information is, the better IMO.

I'm not so sure about the 155mph top speed, though. The highest documented speed I've seen is 146, but again, that's fast enough for ME.

Fast, Slow, what matters is the Driver....

I find it easy enough whipping faster cars, as long as it's not just a straight road. of course, you find the odd good driver out there who teaches you a lesson too !

The numbers on my site were from another vehicle using drag strip instrumentation (how he got 0-60, I honestly don't remember - I created that site 5 years ago).

As I said, the 3.2 number I got from a G-Tech Pro. There are a lot of variables when using an accelerometer-based measuring device, so I wanted to make sure that I posted my source. Also, my run was on BFG R1s on the street, on asphalt, not concrete, with undocumented weather conditions. And, yes, I was surprised at the number, though I would have been disappointed with a 4.2 as I knew I was quicker than a 911 Turbo.

Feel free to consider this highly anecdotal evidence. Since I made no back-up run, I will not even attempt to defend it. I'm just reporting it.

Apparently your opinion differs from mine. Perhaps this is due to a difference in our experience. When I've got the pedal crushing carpet and I'm going "c'mon! c'mon, dammit!" in my head, then the car is lacking in power for me. Of course, I come from a car that couldn't keep 3/4 throttle under control in 1st or 2nd gear.

Again, it should be taken seriously since it is a very good car. The Miata is a very, very good car, but who here thinks it comes stock with power best described as adequate?

I'm not looking to make my RX-8 a frightening screamer. In fact, it would be wrong for the GT character of the car, but I should be satisfied that when I put my foot down, I should be pleased with the acceleration.

Like "lacking", "quick" is a relative term. The RX-8, IMHO, is nowhere near "quick". It handles very well, it pulls well and smoothly out of a corner (thank you Dr. Wankel), and the brakes are better than I thought the floating front calipers would allow. I bought the car because it met my expectations for the price and intent. I needed room for a baby seat in the back. Had I not, the RX-8 would not have had sufficient performance and I would have tried to find an FD to build, bought the Lotus Elise I test drove, or *shudder* looked at the C6 Z06.

Exactly what I said. But that price came with a, um, price. The Miata transmission, for one, with all its faults. That hesitation when getting back on the throttle after an upshift? That "delicate" feel in your hand? That's inherent from the Miata. But with a good transmission already built to handle the power of the Renesis, and which allows the engine to be moved back so far, it was the proper choice for Mazda to make. With 175,000 miles on the FD 5-speed, though, I know that Mazda can do so much better.

Am I complaining? No. I do not think I could have gotten a better car for the price, for my needs. I chose it over an M3, if that tells you anything. But one thing the RX-8 is not, IMHO, is quick.

Absolutely! Which is why the first mod I always advise is driving school.

"Not need for me!", says Mr. Cool, but trust me, there is no one on this board that couldn't benefit from more driving training, me absolutely included.

Then brakes/tires. Then handling/safety. Then power. Repeat. (Cosmetics need not apply.)

How important is the driver? With my 379 RWHp 3rd gen RX-7, at my umpteenth driving school, but my first time at Road Atlanta, where, when first solo'd, I whooped my instructor in a 911 Turbo, I got passed...

Going into the Dip (yes, it was that long ago)...

At the end of a long straight...

After the acute turn 7...

By a nearly stock Dodge Neon ACR (tires, brakes, rollcage)!

Why? The driver (my instructor's son), was that year's SCCA rookie of the year and it was his home track. He had tons of laps in that car and knew where to gain the advantage.

the top speed on an se3p is 185mph trust me i did. ive boosted my rx8 and changed a few things on the T618Z that retricted potential power changed the e-management to a ultimate and got that and my ecu remapped in order to comply with the turbo. so far im boosting 10psi with no problems @ all. when i get my dyno results ill post it up! and to all u FD owners that talk alot of smack about the se3p i say if the 13B renesis had lower compression instead of 10:1 and just had a single turbo(non-sequential) it would somke FD's.

Holy crap! I just looked to see why so many comments on this thread and here we go again, another thread highjacked by Ike in yet another attempt to "enlighten" us on how slow our 8's are. Does this guy ever stop?

Listen Ike, try reading this.....take your time.....here we go.....MOST OF US ARE OK WITH THE FACT THAT THE 8 IS NOT THE FASTEST CAR OUT THERE. ALL OF US COULD HAVE BOUGHT FASTER AND CHEAPER CARS IF WE WANTED TO. OK?

I am not interested in seeing your stats based on different magazine tests with different car models with different drivers on different days in different conditions etc. etc. This info. is as useless as you are.

I know your type; the ****** who buys the fastest car they can afford just for the bragging rights, which really only appeals to other *******. Most 8 owners I know are true enthusiasts who appreciate a car for more than just hard stats.

You drive a Lancer man! 8 owners don't envy you!!

Throttle back there turbo. Ike's on a forum that is open to the public as long as you follow the rules. He hasn't broken any, and is entitled to voice his opinion. Like he said, it's not like this thread is that important.

It's a discussion about comparing two entirely different cars, RX-7 and RX-8. It's only natural that other cars will get thrown into the mix. He didn't hijack anything...

ok. Hmm, we 8's are still new, and still alot of work has to be done to see what Renesis can do , so ... just wait

Plus, 7 is a 7, 8 is a 8, M3 is a M3. Whatever. I love and yes I love my 8, I dont care what other people's words. I still love my 8. (Just like people bashing my gf, I love her, and she loves me, so? Thats all it matters) and Im going to work with whoever to make my 8 even better. Im always open for any test that can improve my 8's performance.

and ...

I KNOW A FERRARI 599 GTB FIORANO CAN SMOKE ANY OF THE CARS HERE !!! (UNLESS THE DRIVER IS AN IDIOT).

So Please Enough of these "My ***** is bigger than yours/No mine is bigger/No His is bigger" kind of thing.

Really sick of seeing threads like this.

Thank you.

Shes cool when shes with me. Very smart, CPA making like 60K a year on her first year.

Not bad I will say ;-)
