Good question...

Based on all of the production cars on the road at this very minute in America, the RX-8 is still probably in the to 1% of the fastest.

(think about this, what is the top selling vehicle in America? Last time I checked it was a Ford F-series truck.)

Sorry, Captain Amazing, I don't think anyone here is agreeing that the RX8 is "slow".

Slower than a last-gen RX7? Sure. Slower than an Evo, an STi, A Mustang GT, a GTO, etc.? Sure.

But SLOW? Not hardly.

Luckily there is much more to a car than timeslips, which anyone who isn't all hung up on "I can beat you in a streetrace, huh huh huh" will recognize. I don't lose any sleep at night knowing that a 350Z or five year-old Camaro SS will beat me in a drag race, and beat me badly. If I wanted a dragster, I would've gotten that GTO instead.

 

Why does everyone compare the normally aspirated RX8 to all the other forced induction cars out there? Once the 8's get FI in masses, then all the talk on all the boards will change for sure. It's only a matter of time.

Yep, it's been a long three years for sure. I'm aiming my car to be boosted in '07. That's almost four years after I took delivery! Maybe I should have just purchased a used 3rd gen and dumped money into a 20B swap

 

To some people it's slow... the RX-8 feels slow to me, I'm not about to call it slow, but it's not fast. There are plenty of family sedans, sport compacts, and small SUVs that will beat the RX-8 or give it a good run for its money. Also, just because a car is fast ina straight line doesn't mean it's a dragster, there are plenty of cars out there that handle well and are as fast or faster than the RX-8.

 

I think that saying "[t]here are plenty of family sedans, sport compacts, and small SUVs that will beat the RX-8..." is pretty much a meritless claim.

But please do name such "plenty" vehicles...especially the family sedans and small SUVs.

Back on subject, test drive the rx-7 and then the 8. You'll want the 8. It's much more car. It feels fast for all practicle situations. You won't be sorry. Just don't race, light weight, 280 hp cars and you'll be OK. A stock fd won't shake an 8 on the road.

 

Alright, This is what I meant. The RX-8 is quick in a straight line. Not exactly fast or slow but it will get the job done. However, the RX-8 is awesome in the corners as that is what it was meant to do which is why it destroys everything in autocross events or very tight courses.

The RX-8 chassis is significantly better than the FD, although the RX-8 is heavier. I have been faster than decently driven FC's and 350z at the track, although both cars have an advantage over the RX-8 on the straights. Drive an RX-8 hard and you'll find that it is an amazingly expressive and rewarding car. The engine is so smooth, and the rush of its rev's is really quite outstanding. In the upper revs, the torque curve is relatively flat, and the throttle response is excellent.

Yes, its not an FD, nor was it meant to be. The FD was Mazda's be-all, end-all sports car. But with the 8, you get a better everyday car, with better street-going suspension, a high-quality interior and exterior, and a factory warranty.

I personally like the RX-8 over the FB and FC, although I would love to get an FD someday. But keep in mind that the FD takes a significant amount of work and $ to make it reliable, and it has a lot more things to be concerned with than the 8. The 8 just needs oil, and to be warmed up every time you take it out. The FD needs all of that, plus more frequent oil changes (for the turbos). It needs you to watch the boost levels and make sure there are no spikes or creep. It has a complex turbo system with many potential points of failure. But its also a brillant car, and certainly faster than the RX-8 in nearly all situations. An interesting point, Mazda had a lapping session at Laguna Seca at the 8's launch and supposedly the RX-8 posted similar times to the FD, when both were driven by a pro.
