Why does everyone compare the normally aspirated RX8 to all the other forced induction cars out there? Once the 8's get FI in masses, then all the talk on all the boards will change for sure. It's only a matter of time.

Yep, it's been a long three years for sure. I'm aiming my car to be boosted in '07. That's almost four years after I took delivery! Maybe I should have just purchased a used 3rd gen and dumped money into a 20B swap :)

Back on subject, test drive the rx-7 and then the 8. You'll want the 8. It's much more car. It feels fast for all practicle situations. You won't be sorry. Just don't race, light weight, 280 hp cars and you'll be OK. A stock fd won't shake an 8 on the road.

Alright, This is what I meant. The RX-8 is quick in a straight line. Not exactly fast or slow but it will get the job done. However, the RX-8 is awesome in the corners as that is what it was meant to do which is why it destroys everything in autocross events or very tight courses. :)

The RX-8 chassis is significantly better than the FD, although the RX-8 is heavier. I have been faster than decently driven FC's and 350z at the track, although both cars have an advantage over the RX-8 on the straights. Drive an RX-8 hard and you'll find that it is an amazingly expressive and rewarding car. The engine is so smooth, and the rush of its rev's is really quite outstanding. In the upper revs, the torque curve is relatively flat, and the throttle response is excellent.
Yes, its not an FD, nor was it meant to be. The FD was Mazda's be-all, end-all sports car. But with the 8, you get a better everyday car, with better street-going suspension, a high-quality interior and exterior, and a factory warranty. I personally like the RX-8 over the FB and FC, although I would love to get an FD someday. But keep in mind that the FD takes a significant amount of work and $ to make it reliable, and it has a lot more things to be concerned with than the 8. The 8 just needs oil, and to be warmed up every time you take it out. The FD needs all of that, plus more frequent oil changes (for the turbos). It needs you to watch the boost levels and make sure there are no spikes or creep. It has a complex turbo system with many potential points of failure. But its also a brillant car, and certainly faster than the RX-8 in nearly all situations. An interesting point, Mazda had a lapping session at Laguna Seca at the 8's launch and supposedly the RX-8 posted similar times to the FD, when both were driven by a pro. |
