Krazed Rx8 is completely right. Why you gotta go and ruin a funny post like that? You should just delete it man. There's a right time and place for everything, that was not it.
OP Go test drive some cars in that comparable price range besides a honduh and the RX8 and see what you think. Base your decision strictly on your own opinion on how it feels. All cars have their weak points and expenses, just test drive and do some research. If you like the RX8 and are responsible enough for it, by all means get it.

if you wanted a RX-8 so bad, first find a good mechanical shop that know how to fix the 8 first, it's no use if you brought the car but can't keep it running. Don't count on the dealer, some of the tech don't even know how to fix it, they are just a bunch of parts changer.

Sure, if you're talking about sports cars.
If you don't think Honda make good vehicles, I'm not sure why you hate the brand Honda so bad, don't let their young immature drivers ruin what is a good, reliable brand in which each of the cars being top 2 or 3 in their segment.
Prelude for a while was the best handling FWD vehicle (the ones with LSD).

Being a first car this is tricky.
The Prelude will probably have more common parts so repairs would be cheaper. I honestly would not even worry about upgrading your first vehicle. I understand the appeal of wanting to do the same stuff as your friends but you would be wise to simply wait until you are in the position where upgrades are affordable and your driving skills are good enough. Even though cars are not an "investment" you're throwing money away on a car that could be involved in an accident.
The Prelude, however, will probably be in worse shape than a low mileage RX8 being a 12+ year old car. An RX8, however, needs to be cared for to ensure it lasts. That means regular oil changes and being fixed if something happens.
I can promise you that a 350z or an Evo would be out of the question for insurance costs. Even me being 28 years old and a driving record with no accidents and maybe 2 tickets I would still pay through the nose for an Evo. The RX8 is very cheap to insure by comparison.

On a side note, is there any murkier category than "sporty" cars? Scion tC? Pontiac G6?

Well, I've owned both. I bought a 2001 Prelude SH as a senior in High School. Great car, was decently quick, light, sporty, had it dropped around 3" all around, and it was a Honda.
Then I bought an RX-8 after my first year in college. Wow. You really can't compare the two cars. Everything about the RX-8 I liked more than the lude.
Having said that, I think the lude was a better car to have in high school. Not as fast, not quite as much eye appeal, less likely for people to mess with, etc.

Who says you need to start with such an expensive sports car? I have an eclipse, accord, and an rx8. The honda has given me more problems then all of the others and the only one that has given me 0 problems is the eclipse of all things. A car can be a hit or miss but the most devistating things you will realize about the 8 is the M word. In fact search around and just get an idea of how much general parts you will need will cost. Tires alone can be around $1000, any mechanical problem will cost you out of this world especially since most mechanics only know piston engines.
The advantage of a prelude is that maintenance is really cheap in comparison... but let it be known you will not have fun in these cars, or impress anyone when compaired with an rx8
The advantage of the 8 is that it is unique, you don't see a ton on the road, it handles so well and inside and out it is a beautiful car. It will cost you a ton more money in the long run with premium fuel. It is the best car I have ever rode in/drove, it will not impress people with numbers.
You can cut down any car (like your freinds are doing) but if your driving a geo and its your dream car i got no problem. It is your opinon and if your car goes 0-60 in 15 seconds and gets 2 mpg and its your dream, its yours. Forget your freinds and look at the facts and you decide.
My pick- doesn't matter, but remember if you get the 8, its not dads money that will be the problem, it is how much time you got to keep it running.

Also i'd like to point out that if you have anything of value people will try to break in it CONSTANTLY, this goes for rims I have had and the rx8. No matter where I park my alarm is going off all the time. I drove my car to school ONE time and this happened lol.

"I wanna go fast!"
Grab the Rx8.
Forget the Honda.
Do not give in to the honda fanclub. Its terrible. Then sooner or later you will end up going to pepboys and buying all those stick ons.
The Rx8 is safer which is what you want for your first car. It may be a bit more for repairs... but you said it yourself money shouldnt be a problem. And the damn CAR IS NOT HIGH MAINTENANCE!!!! I hate when people say that... like its a ****** exotic super car that needs an engine rebuild after every aggressive drive.
ALl it requires is a lil more TLC compared to other cars. That is it. Read up these forums, read the stickies, get the knowledge, and buy the damn 8. It will turn heads and you will love to drive it.
Fair warning though.... driving this car will cause you to feel every other car you drive in the future is complete and utter crap.
