I parked next to a Lambo at my gym the other day, and let me tell you the lambo looked worth every penny more. I was so much lower and aggresive, but thats what its made for. I took a pic let me see if I can find it.

I think this argument can go both ways. When I'm parked next to WRX's, 350z's, TC's, SI's and cars like that, the RX8 really shines are looks WAY more expensive than it is. And actually like an exotic, especially if its modded right.

But also, but i'm rolling next to a Ferrari or something of that nature, I feel like my 8 is a piece of ****. My car is a head turner when its surrounded by average cars, but when i'm next to a 100,000$ plus car, it's nothing special.

I roll with exotics from time to time and I get nothing but compliments.

My boss has a Maserati Gran Sport and we go to events in convoy and track days etc. Style wise the RX-8 holds up very well in such elevated company but get closer and its clearly a cheaper car. The dead giveaways are the paintwork and the interior trim.

The Mazda paint is just awful really - any Volkswagon or Lexus would leave it to shame, nevermind hand finished exotics.

The Maserati is Gold flecked Metallic Black and its paint is sooooo deep and glossy you can see your soul in it!

And the style of the RX-8 interior, though strong, can't make up for the cheap materials used.

(Mind you - here in Oz, the Maserati is 4 times more expensive than the RX-8 and the running costs are scary even compared to the Rotary (EG: it needs a $4.5k gearbox service every 15-20,000 klms))

So the moral is - repaint the RX-8, retrim Shinka Style, and keep on smiling!

Why do we keep creating threads for other boards to link and laugh at?

Really? I have a 2007 Jetta in platinum grey metallic and a 2004 RX-8 in VR. I love them both but the VR wins in depth and flake due to its tri-color process. Deep and glossy can be accomplished with proper detailing products. Everyone I have met loves the VR paint and of course in the sunshine it simply shines its best.

Of course it does not compare to a Maserati, nor would I expect it to, but to so say it's awful? No way.

My only gripe is the "orange peel". But again, this is not a hand polished car.

Many of my friends (who know nothing about cars) who get in the car postulate that is cost me somewhere around $60,000. I think if they took the RX-8, upgraded some of the interior materials a little bit, and changed the grill to resemble a corporate face, they could slap a BMW or Benz logo on it and the vast majority of people wouldn't question it.

With that being said, I love my RX-8 and all, but the f430, to me, is perhaps the most perfect modern automobile, in terms of aesthetics, driving experience, and propensity to give me goosebumps. I would do unforgivable things for a 6 SPD model (less than 10% are 6 SPD), coupe, with the Daytona seats, yellow tachometer, in tour de france blue.

An Rx-8 looks every bit as good as a Ferrari. As long as your Ferrari looks like this.

I think Jettas are built in Thailand - not too familiar with them. We have an 05 German built Passat and its paint is 200% the finish on the RX-8 - and new they were more or less the same price bracket... hence my point.

Orange peel - exactly! Mazda can do better - the finish on the 90's Eunos cars was superb but to me the RX-8 is about as bad/good as Mazda's econo cars like the Mazda 2 or the Mazda 3 - its very average for a modern car.

Back in 2004 when the RX-8 was first being seen by most of the general public, I was asked a few times if my car was a Viper lol.

Not a Ferrari, but I was quite shocked at the amount of orange peel effect on this brand new Lamborghini I photographed this weekend.
