i know NOTHING about autocross, but doesnt this mean that everyone competing is choosing the best car for the race? the fact that the majority of the cars were rx-8's shouldnt shed negative light on the car...quite the opposite i would think.

Want to be competative? buy a competative car
Got the RX-8 Mission accomplished. Cept my wife drives it and won't let me have the keys on Sunday Mornings

My 914 is way faster in it's current form. She don't care what I do with it.

Just finished a lapping day in the 914 Whipped most of the field including the RX-8
Apples and oranges

My poison of choice is Autocross heart rate is better than 180 PPM hands are shaking I got the biggest $hit eating grin on my face. I usually speak at the same rate as my heart rate and it's hardly inteligible.

Lapping day Yea that's cool heart rate maybe 150 I can get out of the car hold a conversation and think about stuff.

Maybe I should steal the keys Saturday night

An excellent autocross run, on the other hand, has almost the exact opposite effect on me, leaving my adrenalin pumping and my hands shaking.

I enjoy both, but I don't find track time to be a good substitute for autocrossing, any more than I find a excellently aged single malt to be a good substitute for a perfectly brewed beer.
great analysis! for me, I guess since i am such a novice, I just find the act of driving down a track very viceral... It gives me a huge rush when I feel like Ive made a decent turn and coming out of corner exits with good power. Trying to find the best brake point, and best line for my driving style (very conservative :p) is extremely rewarding to me. During the few times that I went to autox, its like turn after turn after turn, i never get to open it up like at summit point.

If you had quoted everything I said it might make more sense. I said there are a lot of frontrunners in auto-x, which would imply that the RX-8 is the best car or at least everyone thinks it's the best car for BS...

After racing karts and doing trackdays I have a hard time autoxing. Wasting a whole sunday for 5 minutes of tracktime just doesn't do it for me. The fact that you rarely get out of second gear doesn't help either...

oh snap, my bad. just trying to give credit where credit is due. some people tend to minimize the accomplishments of the rx-8...dominating autocross just sounds like an accomplishment to me and my intentions were to emphasize that.

I started with Autocross, then started doing track days as well - Summit Point/Shenandoah Circuit, and VIR. I love both for different reasons. Different groups do it differently - MSCW and Capital Driving Club do tight courses that are like having a fistfight in a phone booth, but you get a lot of runs - while DC SCCA does larger courses at the HUGE lot at FedEx field, but only a few runs. To me, track driving is more about subtlety, while Autocross is more about intensity.

In my area the local solo racing is done on a figure 8 track that has cones to tighten the course. It is at the Trie Rack and it is a track not a parking lot.

Maybe you can never go back, but a lot of other drivers do, and love to do both. Ditto to altiaian and Paul_in_DC's sentiments. I think about track time as an opportunity to smooth out my inputs. Then I think about autox as an opportunity to apply that smoothness in the fastest way possible (which is much harder than it sounds).
