i thought the exact same thing when my car did that too but its just the fan. I did the exact same thing by putting the key back in and stopping it but DO NOT DO THIS. It is not good to beat it this way. It might sound like the engine but it is the fan. Depending on the temperature, the fan will sound from 5-10 minutes. Nothings wrong wit your car

I have a '07 6spd AT. No problems really.. Except this odd one.

Some days, after putting the 8 on P and shutting it off, the car somehow still stays on.. To fix this, I have to put the keys back in and twist it once more so it stays off.. Strange thing is, after actually thinking it's off, it comes back on.. Not as in starting the engine, but as in it wasn't ever turned off. Weird eh? And yeh, I completely turn the key out too.. I'm guessing my car has sleep mode or something.. Anyone else have this going on or is this somewhat normal? Haha..
Its because the Rx-8's are all seceretly Transformers. And when you leave them alone...

Oh, lord only knows...

Actually it just happened now. Coming back home. It's been doing this for over 5mins.. Since you guys say it's normal. I'll leave it alone.. I just don't want to come back an hour later and see my engine blown up for weird reasons.. lol..

Not only are there a billion threads about this, but it's in the RX-8 FAQ:

Q: When I parked my car today and shut it off it sounded like the engine was still running. Or the fan was running. I turned the key back on and it stopped. What is this?
A: The car comes equipped with electric cooling fans that are temperature activated. On warm days or after hard driving the fans will stay on to help cool the engine after the car is turned off. Don’t interrupt this process by turning the key; let the fans do their job.

Well..................you also could've just read the manual that came with the car!

I really Like Brettus's response though................"A note for RotaryP7 . The engine is the thing under the cover marked Renesis . You can see if it is running by taking the cover off and watching the front of it for things that go around and around .
The fans are in a different place closer to the front of the car but you can't see them without removing some stuff . When they are running they sound like ........ like..........well they sound like fans really."
Ha Ha........priceless!
