is the rx-8 really worth it?

well, i think the car overall is great, but the problem is.. i dont want it to cause me too much trouble. i heard that mazda isnt too great because of the "something is wrong with my engine" and fixing it will be a pain. also, the gas mileage and the oil it consumes will be a shame, because it is a fun car to drive and it will discourage me to drive it too much. but anyway, is this car really worth it?

i don't mean to be a jerk, but what kind of response are you expecting on a forum dedicated to said car?

that said, yes the car is worth it. i add half a quart every 2000 miles or so, get the oil changed every 3000. engine has been perfect, car has been perfect short of 2 rattles. rwd, high revving motor, reasonable back seats and a small but useable trunk. the only car that i think compared in every way was the old e36 m3. currently, the Z doesn't have any of the practicality, or lightness and ease in handling, and the g35 coupe is a little soft in comparison, though both are definitely faster in a straight line. the renesis, though, is the least of your concerns. change the oil every 3k and you'll be just fine.

Gas it burns - it is a sports car not a hybrid.
Oil it burns - I do not have to add any oil usually because I have my oil changed every 3000 miles, and it usually does not burn enough to add any before that oil change.
It comes with a 3 yr/ 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 5 yr/ 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. As far as I have seen, Mazda backs their product as advertised.

I think this is an excellent car if you are looking for a fun car to drive. Don't expect to beat a Corvette off the line, after all that person did pay almost twice the amount for their car.

thats a question to ask yourself, not a forum thats dedicated to that car. If you are not up to the challenge of checking your oil from time to time, adding a little (sometimes not having to either) and paying a little extra for a special car, then go buy the econo cars from toyota and honda. This is a sports car, its purpose was not to be economic, but fun and a car to put a smile on your face XD.

excellent post mugatu. you're message really came across.

since you are new the forums, woot2, i'll translate his message for you.

"please buy the rx8. it has 15-20mpg in normal driving, oil isnt an issue. and neither is anything else. so please buy it then come back and complain on the forums how it gets 15-20mpg."

and yeah i agree with mugatu. the only lowpoint. and i stress only. is the 15-20mpg. and seriously... this is a sports car. not a blah sedan like a ford escort or a toyota corolla.

It's not worth it for me. But I'm stuck. If I had the resources for an engine-swap, I'd do it in a heart-beat. There's nothing special about what the rotary does, compared to piston engines.

Why would you want to do an engine swap?? By the way, sensitive is spelled wrong.

Yup, we have put 17,500 miles on our 05 Sport. been to lots of Autocross events. Absolutely wonderful car to drive the **** out of.
Cruise there and back 300 mile round trip never a complaint. It runs great, drives even better.

I'd rather have something I could more-easily draw power from, makes more power, and gets better fuel economy.

Because I couldn't fit Sens-AHH-TEEV - which is how I said it when I typed it. So it's best read 'Senz-ah-teev'.

If gas/oil consumption discourage you from driving, then why do you even drive? Just use public transportation.

Sporty and Economic don't exactly go hand in hand with any car. If you don't want to pay out extra on gas, then don't get the car, the oil consumption isn't as bad as you think it is.

If you want one of the most fun cars to ever drive, then just buy it. This honestly the only car that I would reconsider buying, it's just not an ordinary car, the design is new, the engine is a rotary, sure it isn't the fastest thing in the world, but we've all seen what happens when you do 0-60 in .9 seconds! , and even so it still has enough power to get you into some trouble, if it didn't there wouldn't be all these lurkers/noobies making their first post with "What happens if I take this to court??"

I drive mine everyday and have no problems with it.........the engine problems are really exagerrated. No one ever really complains if their car is running perfectly.

Also, it doesn't consume that much oil that you think it does. I rarely if ever have to add oil in between oil changes and i do oil changes between 3-4K. If i have to add any.........it would be 1/4 if that. and thats at 2K-2.5K miles, right before it might need an oil change. So it really isn't that bad, and it consumes oil by design.... So it shouldn't be an issue if you know what you are getting into and for a sports car.........its gets pretty decent gas mileage, i've been seeing 18-20MPG consistently depending on city or highway or mix driving.
