Hey Vlaze, do you use SolidWorks by chance? I went back to school in 2005 and got my SolidWorks certificate. Powerful software, amazing design tool.

 

I did in college, yes. At work I trained on and currently use Unigraphics. If I wanted to mess around with designs in my own time I'd chose to dl and use Solidworks again. They're pretty cross adaptable IMO.

I bought it because I got sick of my E36 M3's harsh suspension, especially when going out on dates. The RX-8 offers similar performance without sacrificing ride quality.

 

I am a 38 year old CDMA switch tech. Basically I stare at a computer all day watching the celluar network and putting out fires as needed. I researched purchasing the 8 for 6 months of which 2 months was spent lurking on this forum. I love the car!! It is unique. I had considered a 350Z, Infinity G35 coupe, and Mustang along with the RX8 but I needed a backseat and I did not want to be driving something that I see every 3 cars. People at work assume I am making big bucks because I drive it. LOL!! I bought a 2005 manual Touring with only 15k miles back in 2007. I just hit 71k.

I'm a 21 year old Mechanical and Electrical engineering major. I also, co-op with a car company 6 months out of the year. So you can definitely count me in the nerdy-ish and young category.

I think the primary two attractions to the Rx-8 (at least for me) were the rarity and the mechanical unique-ness of it.

I'm a 34 year old exercise physiologist and researcher. I'm currently working on a 2 year grant with cancer patients/survivors. I'm divorced, so only need room for my 3 kids - and this fits perfectly. I've owned everything from Jeeps to Mustangs, 3 Camaros, a Trans Am, my last vehicle was Chrysler 300 SRT-8 that met it's end with a telephone pole @ 60 mph. My newly purchased RX-8 is for pleasure, I commute daily on a 2011 Specialized Hardrock mountain bike.

 

20 years old serving my first term in the Air Force as an Electrical and Environmental apprentice. Always like niche little cars, before my first RX8 I used to drive a Pontiac Fiero. Nerd? Yes.

 

24 years old working midnights at my local Sheriff's Office. I just went back to school this Spring to finish my bachelor's degree after I took 3 years off from it. In my spare time I've been breakdancing for 10+ years.

I'd say I'm pretty nerdy also.. Plus I've always been into sports cars, and definitely like being the odd one out in the group. I've always either been the only Apple enthusiast with a bunch of PC enthusiasts, and now I'm the onlyrotary enthusiast in the group. I guess I like being unique...

 

^^^That can be said about many of us - the unique factor is huge for me too.

I see an RX-8 driver and feel like its a family member. It is definitely an interactive car in the attention it needs. So I tend to think of the drivers as either rotary enthusiasts or people who like to learn. It is that kind of vehicle that requires some learning.

Myself... I hate what I do for a living. Tech Support. It is filled with nimrods that have no critical thinking skills. They can use google to find **** but they can't use google to find a solution to why their computers are acting odd. I would rather be working on complex issues that takes a mind to fix instead of working on things that a simple reboot fixes. My goal is to get to a place where I can open my own high performance auto shop.

The reality of the RX-8 crowd is that it is a very diverse crowd filled with 2 types of people. Those that hate the car because it is too different and those that love the car BECAUSE it is so different. I am one of the ones that love the car.

 

lol...indeed....and also I think I am the only lawyer who hangs around here. So, I am quite the oddball RX8 owner, but IDC, I LOVE the Ocho!!!

 

I'm 51 and a music instructor/pianist at 2 local universities. I have driven rotaries since I was 28. My goal has always been preventing a sense of boredom when driving a car. Since driving the 7 and now the 8, I am always looking forward to the drive. Never bored. Heck, I try and think of reasons TO drive. It is just that enjoyable. I am constantly receiving compliments on the car, from the paint sparkle (I have Velocity Red) to the red/black interior. I know there have been many quirks, and who knows if I'll keep it short term or long term, but I was just thrilled and excited at the chance to drive a 'new' rotary after only having driven old 7 rotaries.

35 yr old machinist here. I take my car to track days and do a ton of autocrossing. I also have a continuous stream of strange mechanical issues that can only happen in this car. Currently I'm looking for a new engine. Anybody got one?

As a person, I'm cynical, stubborn, sarcastic, and uncooperative. I'm also really caring, dependable, and able to do or learn almost anything.

My friend Mark described it best. "You and that car are capable of amazing things when you get done coughing yourselves to life."

It's been the worst financial move I've ever made and I really should sell it and pay down some debt. I love it, though, so I'll just keep it like a high maintenance girlfriend.

 

You want nerd, that's me! I'm 28 work sales for Microcenter, a computer parts store. Think Newegg or Tiger Direct, but in an actual store. I spend my days helping people fix their old machines and helping build machines. Anything form an HTPC to a monster gaming rig, to a storage server. When I get home I dump what time I can get from the wife on my PC. An ever evolving $2K+ machine that runs benchmarks and games.

On the car front, I have always loved cars. Had lots of varied cars. From a mildly modified 89 Camaro to an 87 944. Now the 8. The only car I loved about as much as my 8 was my 944. They both drive a lot alike. I think that's part of why I love the 8 so much. Now that I have the 8 I plan to get back into grass roots motorsports. I used to be a pretty successful autox racer a few years back. Time to get back at it.

Outside of all that, I also play paintball and golf. I travel around a bit with a team I'm on for paintball called Team Akkadian. We are very successful scenario players. The team has won MVP titles at D-Day Oklahoma and Living Legends as well as Giant Big Game. I can't afford to travel to all the games but try to make a few a year.

I guess in the end I'm not full nerd. I'm kind of all over the place. But, in the end, I love my car!

 

I'm a 21 year old chemist...Graduated from Texas Wesleyan University with a B.S. in Biochemistry when I was 20...I love my career...I work for a pharmaceutical company that is the global leader in eyecare now that we've merged with Novartis and Ciba Vision...When I'm not working, I spend time traveling to random places (I love airport terminals...I always meet great people), going to car meets, working on my car (I don't trust other people enough to touch him), going to the gun range, reading, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

I can go on and on, but I think I've covered the basics.

 

I'm 19 and a sophomore at NC State. I'm majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife Management, with a concentration in Wildlife Science and Biology. So just slightly different from all of you engineers.... I wouldn't consider myself nerdy (what "cool" college kid thinks that of themselves? haha) but I'm drawn to how unique the RX-8 is. It looks better than a majority of the things on the road nowadays and can out-handle them in the twisties also. I mean rotary engines are just such cool inventions.

 

I'm 31-years old and I work in Federal Law enforcement. I'm married and have a 19-month old baby boy.

I have a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and played football through my college years. Most of my life has been books, football, and cars. Since I was a little kid I have been around cars. My father is a retired bus-mechanic and he ran a repair shop out of his garage. I was helping him out since as far back as I can remember.


I have always like smaller and good handling sports cars. I also love unique cars that you don't see everyday. Back when I could afford my 1st fun car, I ended up with an '88 Pontiac Fiero. I had that car for 12 years and turned it into a 480hp low-11-second beast. It was fun while it lasted, but with my little boy, I wanted a car that I could drive him around in. Even back when I bought my Fiero, I really wanted an FC RX7 as I was fascinated by rotary engines, but I couldn't find one in decent shape. I am very happy that I was able to rectify that choice with my RX8. The RX8 is pretty much the perfect car for me.

This RX-8 owner is a 45 year old retired master certified tech, GM, ford, Chrysler trained. advanced derivability diagnostics was/is my specialty.

I have spent most of my life talking to inanimate objects asking them where it hurts. Everything from jet skies to Maserati all they are is nuts and bolts.

In the 1990's I desert raced, open class, some of my bikes were the tt600,CR500, KX 500, YZ 400. But with age, comes a cage.
I,m a Adrenaline junkie. without a fix.

The Rx8 has the power band of a dirt bike, handles like a slot car,and is easy to work on.

The two cars my o4 RX-8 replaced, was a 600 horsepower 1972 El Camino,(5 miles to the gal) and a Park Avenue Ultra Supercharged

 

I'm not exactly on the engineer side of things, but I am 19 and a Medical Doctorate student. I think that most RX-8 owners are a little on the higher side of the IQ scale than most people. Even though there are some pretty.. needy people that come into these forums.

 

I'd honestly never thought about it, but I guess the Rx8 is kinda a nerd car... The only friend I have that drives one is a systems administrator. lol Personally, I'm 21 and was formerly a web developer. I was actually going to school to get a degree in Information Systems to make the switch to straight software development when I got a job in b2b Sales. Hard to stay in school when you're making more money than the job you're going to school for ;-). Even so I still sell technology and definitely have nerdy tendencies.

So I guess the nerd thing is right...?
