I consider dealers kind of like a teen working a summer job at a fast food place. They don't know what new product the corporation has plans for or what old product they plan to discontinue until they come to work and the corporation slaps something new on the menu! I was at a dealership with a friend who was in the market a few years ago when I had a guy at a dealership tell me that a Chrysler LHS could do 0-60 in something like 5.9 seconds! I had a good laugh on that one considering I had stacks of car magazines taller than he was to prove otherwise. Hell most dealerships don't know the average test numbers that publications (or their manufacturer) get for the cars they sell! Don't trust them on anything (not even price quoted)!

Maybe they are discontinuing it after 2007. Maybe not. We've been hearing people say that each year for the past 2 or 3 was the last year and each year it returns. Eventually they'll get it right as it gets towards the end of it's natural life span.

I don't see any reason why Mazda should keep making the RX-8. Purely from a business stand point...

Anyways, I got a strange offer from Mazda of Thousand Oaks. One of their sales guys saw my ad on Autotrader - 05 GT for 20750 and contacted me saying would you be interested in a new Mazda if I got you what you are asking on a trade. I was a little surprised. A Mazda dealer of all people offering 20750 on an RX-8? Guess he thought he could sell me another Mazda at MSRP. hehe.

Rule of thumb: dealers don't know ****, and sales guys even less.

That's the same dealership that said that they weren't going to do the vacuum test on my engine since i had no previous compaints on power/performance loss.

I thought that it was obligatory on every car.

Does this sound right to anyone????

I just love how one lowly car salesman, who I'm sure could care less—can whisper the 8 is being discontinued and poof—it's a full-fledged "issue" worthy of debate on RX8Club.com—the place many prospective buyers come to find out about the car.
The internet equivalent of going up to someone and asking—loudly so everyone can hear—"so tell me, have you stopped beating your wife?"

I've learned a hell of a lot here, but I gotta admit—crap like this makes me respect professional journalists more and more.

well sam is a stand up guy and answered me. He didnt give direct answers to my questions but here are his first reply
Our contacts at Mazda have informed us that the RX-8 will "most likely" be
discontinued after the 2007 MY. They have not officially released this
information. I did not tell someone to trade in their RX-8 because of this
reason. I may have only shared information that is floating around. You
may want to speak with your contacts at MNAO for more concrete information.
Sam
and his second in answer to a follow up
I'm not sure if it originated from our regional rep or our Mazda Service
rep. I have heard this from a number of RX-8 owners and employees of this
and other Mazda dealerships. The only thing I can say for sure is that
Mazda may replace or discontinue the RX-8 for the 2008 MY. If you find out
for sure, please let me know. We at times receive information that is "off
the record". This happens to be one of those situations.
Thank you,
Sam
so really what this means is that some people read the comments on this forum (and others) about sales figures etc and then it gets rumored around until it gets to the sales guy in the form of "they might cancel the rx-8" and he perpetuates it by telling someone who brings it back to the forum where it started.

of course ill ask mazda directly at 7stock

Zoom44,

You the man! Thanks for the follow-up. For the record, he did seem like a nice guy, but he did CLEARLY say the RX-8 is being discontinued in 2007. Either way, I agree with other posters.. It's a non-issue now.

Although I have to ask. If I can't ask here for clarity/confirmation of what was said to me, where can I ask?

The 2007 hasnt even been released to the dealer yet, at least we havent gotten one. To say there will be no 2008 model is pure speculation on his part. He certainly didnt get that info from MNAO...

If they discontinue building the RX-8 will it mean people will stop making new threads on this forum about flooding, low gas mileage and overstated HP?

It could be worth it for that benefit alone!

Another case of a Mazda/Korean dealership--these people sell cars to people who have No Credit! all day long. The average Mazda salesperson is a guy who couldn't make it at Toyota or Chevy or Subaru.

It does not really concern me if the RX-8 will be discontinued... The Rotary will live for sure. Mazda is making money on the RX-8, its not like its selling really poorly, Mazda is an international brand, gotta look at the whole picture. If they discontinue the 8, it'll be for good, put the rotary in another sports car, it could be RX-3, or even RX-7, who knows, but one thing thats certain is that the rotary is here to stay.

I have heard about a body style change in 2010 for the 8. I remembered it because I was thinking it was a good thing since I took out the extended warranty, and she'll still be under warranty!

If this ends up being the last year, it's okay. "2008 RX-8" doesn't sound so good anyway. "2008 MAZDASPEED RX-8" would have been nice though. Flows nicely off your tongue.

The last gen Supra is an anomoly. Earlier gens are not. My son has my old 3rd gen, with little over 100K miles, and loves the hell out of it. They are getting rare, and yes are considered collectors items now in some venues. I have a friend with one, and am looking to buy another 3rd gen. I bought the 8 BECAUSE it reminded me of the Supra. Its the only mid range auto that came anywhere near the handling capability of the 8, and it has TOTALLY more torque than the 8, not to mention fuel economy. Im not downing my baby, I love her, but you just cant throw out a blanket statement about Supra's.

it's actually not that far off. zoom had a good post that i have bookmarked.

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...60&postcount=7

the last letter on there has a good flow chart of what they are to do. if you don't have any complaint of power loss there is no need for them to run the test.

He was probably talking about how they didn't release the 2006s until late in the year due to the need for all the cars to get new starters and spark plugs before delivery to dealerships so instead of releaseing the 2006 models in late 2005, they released them in mid 2006.

Lotta rumors.

Ergo I bought an AWD CX7 a few months after getting the RX8. The CX7 is a a nice daily driver. A few months later my wife bought a 5. It turns out two other folks I know with CX7's also have RX8's.

despite low production numbers the RX8 still makes money for Mazda. Probably has more margin then any other Mazda. So why would they stop making them?

You're only expecting 84,000 miles out of your car? I'm thinking more like 200k for mine. At my rate of 7k a year, that works out to about 28 years.

At my rate, it'll take me 22 years just to hit 100K miles. I drive 4500 per year..

Also, FYI the dealership in question moves more Mazda's than any in Ohio and is in top ten in entire US. Net, they're fairly large and to be fair, they do offer nice deals. It was just that comment about discontinuing that through me off..
