The RX-8 is Damn Fast!

So guys I've been researching a few cars and comparing them to the RX-8 in terms of 0-60 times and I'm pretty damn impressed. I have a friend with a BMW 330i and another friend has a Mercedes E-Class and my dad used to have a Cadillac DeVille. All of them were laughing at the poor performance specs of the Mazda (238hp, 160 torque). Having have test driven the sports car I was convinced it doesn't feel slow. So I did some research. I'm about to buy a 2004 RX-8, and I made it fair by making that year the base for all my comparisons. The 330i has 225hp and close to that in torque, the Merc has 200hp but 370 torque (its a diesel), and the Caddy has around 300 hp & torque. Not one of these cars is even close to the 8's 6.4sec to 60 time however. I realize that all not one of he cars is really a close competitor to the Mazda RX-8 but it is another example of why power is not the only factor that makes a fast car, and yet another example of why the RX-8 is a great car!

The RX-8 isn't even left in the dust for top speed. I read somewhere that someone brought a US spec car to Germany on the autobahn and topped it off at 155mph! The German made 330i gives up at 138mph!

It is damn fast, but the fresh spark plugs, coils, and flash from the dealer only last for a week maybe.

Yeah its fast. But more than just being fast it is a fun car to drive. And I have driven my fair share of sports cars. The 8 wins in all around driver satisfaction hands down.

A fast 0 to 60 rum requires 7500 RPM launch while feathering the clutch... This requires 1) skill 2) deep pockets.

If 0 to 60 is your thing then get a different car. Seriously.

The 8 is good at carving up curvy roads.

Yeah, it's been said a million times that the RX8 isn't strongest in its straight run. It isn't a dog, by any means, but it isn't the quickest car out there.

I couldn't agree more with Terch1. I've owned a 400 WHP Evolution VIII (God do I miss her) and a Mazdaspeed 3. I don't think there's a car that's more fun to drive than the RX8. No joke. Furthermore, the RX8 is the sexiest of the car's I've owned.

I have a 2004 RX8 and I love it. Sure, it's a love/hate relationship because of all the mechanical work and upkeep, but damn is it worth it. I never fail to turn heads and blow up sun dresses!

Biggest problem is torque, so the 8 doesn't 'feel' fast. From 45-70 the RX8 can keep up with cars that are far more impressive on paper. However, as noted above, it's built to be a drivers car and it shines on the curves.

It does have enough power to impress women however

That may be a good way to put it. It's fast, but not necessarily quick.

i prefer the handling of the s2000 since they revised it. the EVOs/STIs will still enter a corner at around the same speed and exit quicker. although handling/breaking are the rx8s strongest features, there are plenty of cars out there that that cost around the same, and out perform it in those categories as well.

the 8 is more a neutral feel car. just fun to drive and well balanced.

Yeah, but the second people realize what the RX8 is REALLY about, they will realize how amazing the car really is. Life isn't measure in the 7 seconds to 60, but rather in the way the RX8 laughs at the suggested speed signs for manuevering a turn while spinning your rotors to 9000 RPM. My car will easily tripple the suggested speed, and do so while spitting pure sex out of the exhaust. After all, it's not the panoramic sunroof that gets the ladies...

All of which turn like tonka trucks (with the exception of maybe the Cobalt SS).

Top Model Camry, Accord, Maxima, and Altima are all above 30 grand and have engines double the displacement of the RX8.

Just sayin, that was truly an apples to oranges comparison

Driver...... A good driver can score up some kills in a Kia Rio. The Rx just needs to be spanked and the oddities worked out. Then dogg that bad boy till it surrenders the road kills into the victory column.
