RX* can't swim

obviously...so we had crazy rain and flooding in downtown charleston today and here is the result. its a 2005 with over 94,000 miles on it. it had water up to the seats sitting there for over an hour waiting for the tow truck. what do you guys think the result will be?

the car was on and running when i hit the water...it got deep crazy fast and the car bogged and stopped.

i know they can fix up the inside and get it all cleaned up. obviously i guess new engine will be needed. i really love my car but im worried now about being stuck with a car that has flood or salvage on the title. what do you guys think will happen? what do i do? insurance adjuster probably won't look at it until monday i guess.

Rotaries are pretty resilient to water.. No vaporlock, can just push the rotors to get the water out.

The fact it was running, and warm, could crack the block, and as you said "dirty, salty". Maybe..

I think insurance would total it. When you start adding up new interior/seats/carpet and maybe an engine. Oh and all the electrical items too.

I wouldn't want to drive a car that sat in the water with all its airbag sensors and whatnot getting soaked... I don't think that the floodwater was really salty...as it wasn't the ocean that came in - it was the gallons of rain. I was up in Mount Pleasant enjoying Melvin's -- Glad I didn't go downtown.

high tide is at 9pm tonight here i think so it may not have been that salty but i don't think the flooding was just from the rain downtown at all...

An 05 with 94,000 miles. Start shopping for a new car now, cause that will be totaled out.

Hope you have some money saved - you're gonna have to go looking for a new car. That thing is totaled.

Did you think you were going to make it or did it just suddenly come up on you? I avoid sitting water like the plague.

Yeah I guess there was a bit of tidal action in there too, but from the radio they made it sound like it was just the rivers. Saltwater emersion would mean pretty much automatic totaling. With the salt getting into all sorts of crevices the car will rust away. Not to mention chasing the electronic gremlins... If you have it fully insured I would try to get it totaled and pick up something new... If not, make sure it's drying out now as well as possible and hope for the best. Distilled water rinses may help some parts...but it's a mess. Freshwater is still bad news...did anything interesting happen electronically? IE lights flashing, horn honking, etc...?

ok so to fill in the story....

start to go down the road and see it is looking deep. it is a one way road. some ***** in his big pick up truck behind me starts honking and waving at me as i try to back up. he won't move for me to back up so i say f it...i can see the ground on the other side it must not be that deep...and i was wrong.

i will officially take the dumbass award of the day for sure...

i owe slightly more than i believe it will be worth but i do have GAP insurance. i guess at this point i'm hoping that they will total it because a flood/salvage car is going to be pretty much worthless.
