Roadtrip: 1000km on the Trans-Canada Hwy (long read w/ pics)

Recently took the 8 for a long trip to Vancouver, from Calgary. Stayed there for 6 days, then headed back to Calgary. The trip is about a 10hr drive, and is about 1000km long. My brother did all the driving on the way down. On the way back I did 4hrs of the driving. Here are my impressions...

The drive was far less brutal than I thought it would be in the 8. After 10hrs, my *** was not even aching. The 8's seats are really one of my favourites in any car. The bumps were really absorbed well by the 8.

BUGS...I was originally going to purchase a nosemask, but they are not available in Calgary anymore. So I decided to use Rain-X bug and tar protection, and their pre-wash gel. The protection basically creates a film on the surface of the paint and comes off when you spray water on it. The pre-wash is probably some specially formulated soap. They worked like a charm and are fairly cheap, 8 bucks CDN each. Highly recommended for anyone on a roadtrip.

My biggest concern during the trip was gas consumption...but we actually got 500+km on each tank cruising in 6th gear at about 130km/h, occasionally downshifting to pass. The trip down to Vancouver we made 4 stops for gas just to be safe, but the trip back to Calgary, we made only 2 stops.

The trip down to Vancouver was mostly downhill, and the 8's powerband was really nice. The trip back however was a different story. Lots of uphill...Some parts I put her in 4th @ 7000rpm and she was still struggling to get moving...Anyhow the drive was still nice and fun. It was fun taking the 8 to 175km/h during some stretches of road. The roadnoise and engine noise was really minimal imo.

There were many idiots on the hwy, so 100% attention was required, and I would not recommend using cruise control. The best idiots are the ones who go like 10 below the speed limit but stay in the left lane (there are like 50000 signs saying slow traffic keep right). On the way back (already in Calgary area) we spotted a wrecked black TSX. Apparently the driver died at the scene and 3 passengers are in serious condition. I'm not sure how it happened because that stretch of road was all straight. The story can be found if you Google Calgary News. A few sites have it.

After the trip I have noticed that my tires are pretty much worn, and needs a rotation.

Hehe, yeah we have tons of those drivers here in SoCal ... just shows you how much some drivers pay attention to road signs It's really discouraging to see semis on the far right lanes going faster than the traffic jam that those people create on the far left lanes.

Nice pics BTW ... I have to make a trip there again ... really beautiful country ...

Yeah the trip was great...I didn't see many 8's in Vancouver, but as usual there are 50 billion g35s, 350zs and bimmers.

Hope to pull this trip off again next yr!!
