reverse grind?
I've noticed that occasionally 1st and reverse don't engage fully - this seems to happen on most/all cars, best I can tell. It has happened on most of mine, at least. If you're experienced enough with the car you can usually just feel that the shift lever hasn't quite moved all the way into its gate. The problem can be fixed by going to neutral, re-clutching, and trying again.
Alternatively, could it be that you're still rolling forward before reversing? I know that's a pretty common culprit too.
If you know your problem fits neither of those issues, you may want to have someone take a look at the car just as a preventative measure. It's certainly not a common problem, so if it becomes frequent get it fixed asap.

Mine does the exact same thing... Just pay attention when you are putting it in reverse and if it does not 'click' in then put it in N let the clutch out and re do it. Mazda has a thing in the manual that says "If you experience difficulty in putting the car in reverse put it in neutral and retry it"
OK thanks for all the info.=) that grind hasn't happened to me in a while but, yesterday was a bad day.. for the first time EVER i started to burn the clutch when going up my driveway. i was giving too much gas and not a lot of clutch. i noticed what i was doing so i stopped right away. T_T
quick fix.... dont put it in reverse... you lose all the torque
but seriously, if when putting it into gear and it doesn't "grab" apply slight pressure to the shifter while releasing the clutch and giving it a little gas, the gear will slide right in no problem

90% of the time it goes into reverse just fine. I think I've developed muscle memory that helps me do it just right. But if it doesn't then I put it into first then back to reverse and it typically goes in. I haven't had a chance to try the "give it a little gas" technique.
