reverse grind?

anyone grind when you go into reverse from time to time? (M/T) cause i was backing out and it seems like its in then i start to let the clutch go and GRIND!:tear:

andrew186 06-20-2009 10:23 PM

yeah it happens to me sometimes, to avoid it keep the backward pressure on the gknob while selecting reverse and lift the clutch very slowly

trustbuddy 06-20-2009 11:02 PM

it used to happen to me.
i got a new transmission from mazda as i was still under bumper to bumper warranty.

crittyex8 06-20-2009 11:32 PM

the tranny is under a 60k mile warranty i believe.

I've noticed that occasionally 1st and reverse don't engage fully - this seems to happen on most/all cars, best I can tell. It has happened on most of mine, at least. If you're experienced enough with the car you can usually just feel that the shift lever hasn't quite moved all the way into its gate. The problem can be fixed by going to neutral, re-clutching, and trying again.

Alternatively, could it be that you're still rolling forward before reversing? I know that's a pretty common culprit too.

If you know your problem fits neither of those issues, you may want to have someone take a look at the car just as a preventative measure. It's certainly not a common problem, so if it becomes frequent get it fixed asap.

always.anthony 06-21-2009 04:14 AM

usually not in all the way, you can only hop in reverse when "not moving" as in your tires are not moving, and if are at like 1mph max. if you try to go in while moving, you just grind.

I figures out if you take it in an out of reverse like twice it goes in and have not had it grind since i started doing that

Mine does the exact same thing... Just pay attention when you are putting it in reverse and if it does not 'click' in then put it in N let the clutch out and re do it. Mazda has a thing in the manual that says "If you experience difficulty in putting the car in reverse put it in neutral and retry it"

^yeah those high tech engineers are good...."if it doesn't work try it again" haha

They stole that technique from software engineers.

OK thanks for all the info.=) that grind hasn't happened to me in a while but, yesterday was a bad day.. for the first time EVER i started to burn the clutch when going up my driveway. i was giving too much gas and not a lot of clutch. i noticed what i was doing so i stopped right away. T_T

CyberPitz 06-22-2009 12:49 PM

Reverse has no syncros, so there will be good chances you're going to grind. It happens to the best of us.

^are you calling me the best??? lol J/K

haha... indeed. but it actually works.
It's a common event that characterizes all manual transmissions from time to time.

probably stole the technique from Ferrari :D

Grungepup 06-22-2009 11:21 PM

quick fix.... dont put it in reverse... you lose all the torque

but seriously, if when putting it into gear and it doesn't "grab" apply slight pressure to the shifter while releasing the clutch and giving it a little gas, the gear will slide right in no problem

RedLine9x 06-24-2009 07:31 PM

it happens, no biggie, try again :P

The Drunk IT Guy 06-25-2009 04:48 PM

90% of the time it goes into reverse just fine. I think I've developed muscle memory that helps me do it just right. But if it doesn't then I put it into first then back to reverse and it typically goes in. I haven't had a chance to try the "give it a little gas" technique.
