My local service/parts dept was like... "retractable key? what's that?"

Apparantly they haven't walked to the front of the dealership and looked at the keys for the 05 models.

Wow.. I've had my 04 keys in my pants and toss the pants in the washer with water. The keys were soaked but still works fine though.

I received the '05 key through IBFUBAR2000 (who was great with communication and very courteous btw) and took it to Home Depot to get it cut. The guy refused to do it because of some "code" or "transmitter" or something he mentioned in the key itself. Then he goes on to say that if he did and something short circuited, it could cause a fire and blow up my car! What is with this guy?? He said, " I knew it because the key looks special". They have some machine that checks for something implanted in the key. I believe it was registering the FOB. Finally, he says not to take it anywhere else, but the dealership.

Is this something I should be concerned with? Have you guys encountered this, but know it is crap and got it cut anyway?

Lawrence,

Don't worry about it. I just took my key to a locksmith and had them cut it. Cost me all of $1.99. You won't have to worry about anything in the key blade itself that is electrical.
