How does everyone think the resale value of the RX-8 is going to be?

I'll give it 4 stars. Look at the RX-7 if you want some idea

 

I think itl be somewhat low, to be honest; namely because I expect the RX-7 to come out, and assume that a lot of 8 owners will be dumping their cars for 7s.

 

Personally I'll be keeping the RX-8, probably won't get the RX-7.

 

I'll be keeping mine too. There's a reason I'm buying a car with four seats. If I wanted a two-seater sports car now, I'd buy a two-seater sports car now, and not just settle for the RX-8.

 

I won't be dumping my RX-8 either.

I could afford to purchase a very nice used Porsche C2/C4 or an early Acura NSX (both very reliable used cars!!) for the same money as the RX-8. But the lack of seating is problematic. The RX-7 will not help me either.

For me, the only choices were used E36 M3, new 330i, or Subaru STi. E36 is getting old, 330i is boring, and the STi is too boy racer. RX-8 is here to stay. I just hope Racing Beat will offer a few fun upgrades.

I don't think the resale value will be as good as a Supra ($32k for a 6 year old car?), but it should hold its own against cars like the G35c, 350z and WRX/Evolution.


The FD's had good resale value, but reports of turbo defects early on lowered them quite a bit...


I love the car's blend of sport and practicality and have no intentions of dumping it for a higher-performance, but lower-practicality RX-7.


Even if some dump their '8s when the new RX-7 comes out, there will still be enough of a market for them to keep resale values high enough.

I'm actually afraid the resale value won't be that good, especially for first year production models. Yes the car is great, looks good, performs well, etc. That has been covered a million times. But let me play devil's advocate.

Reliability is an unknown quantity. God forbid, but there's a risk it may not be good. Gas mileage doesn't seem that great either. By the time most you resell your car, let's say 3-6 years from now, there will be IMA (hybrid) sport cars/sedans out there with the same performance and 30%-50% better mpg. How knows how much gaz will cost by then.

I'm not saying resale value will definitely be bad. I'm just saying there are significant rist it isn't good.

Then again, that is not going to stop me from test driving and probably bying one this Summer. I'm not bying the car to baby it for 5 years in the prospect of selling it. I'm bying it to enjoy it.

My 2 cents.

 

How about a G35. That's what I'd get if I wanted to spend that much money. The RX-8 is the best alternative.

 

The G35 is very nice, however:

(1) It's comparably heavy at 3400 pounds,

(2) It's not a true 4-door (more difficult access to back), and

(3) In Canada (where I live), a well-equipped G35 costs $8000 more than a well-equipped RX-8. That's a BIG difference.

How's that for some good reasons? :D

 

if you don't want the risk of resale, which i've learned from owning non traditional cars over the years is a big risk with something like the rx-8, lease it and put the risk back on mazda. my thoughts on leasing are two fold, one, if you really don't like the car after a few years, it's gone and you're on to that hybrid thing with 30-50% better mpg. or, 2, if it gets wrecked, we all know it will never drive the same. good luck selling a car with body work when there are other ones that are clean. with a lease, you simply get it fixed and give it back at the end of the lease.

sure leases cost a little more, but that's the cost of eliminating the resale risk and the accident risk.

if you have a business to lease it, then you get added benes of deducting the lease payments.

 

eficht makes some good points. On a brand new car the resale is hard to predict and (if you know you'll only keep the car for 3-4 years) a lease removes the risk of a big loss when it comes time to sell.

Personally I think the RX-8 will have very good resale in the 3rd year if it has no major recalls and reliability is good over the first two years. I haven't decided if I should buy or lease yet - depends on if any good lease deals are available on it in July.
