Are you concerned about the resale value of your 8?

Pretty simple question.

I'm always vexed over whether I should do this mod or that mod, trying to get a list of things I can do within my budget but am always back-pedalling at the thought of trying to sell a hotted up car.

Eventually, the car needs to go. Unless you are going to sell the car to the wreckers in 10 years resale value is always an issue right?

The way i see it, there is two options.

1. Do whatever you want to your car, sell-parts, replace parts and make your car what you want it to be and deal with the possibility of having a hard time selling your car later. (In addition to the fact that you can't really part out your car cause you've sold the stock rims, the stock suspension etc..). Ie Don't give a toss about resale value.

2. The more conservative approach. Mod with the possibility of converting your car back to stock when it comes time to sell. Will involve higher labour costs but you will have an easier time selling. (And maybe restrict you to realistic mods that can be swapped out with minimal labour. IE Excludes possibility of mods such as spoilers with non-stock mounting holes)

I'm sure some of you have read I want some things done to my car. (New rims and King Springs). But am not sure whether I want to sell the stock rims and get rid of the original suspension and get some money back (I can sell the aftermarket parts later and also get money back) or keep those parts just in case when I go to sell later on down the track, I won't have such a hard time flogging the car. (And sell the aftermarket rims and springs)

So what do you guys think of modding and resale?

I have a hunch judging by all the crazy modding going on around here nobody gives a toss about resale value.

There is still this sensible voice in my head that tells me to think this through before I start dropping $$.

Damn where is that voice on Friday night when I always end up pissing away all my money on booze.

I really don't give a crap about resale.

Anything that will depreciate thousands of dollars just by driving it off the lot should not be considered an investment.

So drive it, mod it to your budget's content, hell ... ENJOY it!!!

+1 not worried about resale value. I intend to keep the car till the day all the panels, bolts all rust out. Then I'll pull the engine out and remove the rotors and use them as bookends.

just wanted to let everyone know from the down under that the resale value for the 8 in the states is slightly climbing.... Used to be around $20k usd (give or take $1k) now its climbing slightly to around $21k - $23k (give or take a few hundered). just wanted to let the people that are afraid know. also remember that because of the fast and furious movies, the resale for rx7 is increasing as well and i wouldnt be suprised if the same trend for rx8s will happen. and if they stop producing rx8's, itll be great for all of us Just my input from the states.

My impressions are that the resale value of the 8 in Oz is dropping. Almost 10k on new price since its release.

Personally, I think this car as a second hand car will really only appeal to people who want it done up or to do it up, therefore the more sensible mods you have the more appealing your car will be. This is what bugs me so much with Mazda Australia's reluctance to bring out and support Mazdaspeed.

It is partly because when I brought my car in 2003. 1 AUD buys 60 something yen. Now 1 AUD buys 85 yens!

The 15% drop in stamp duty in the last 3 years certainly did not help resale values of any 3 year old car , however once the market settles the resale of 5 year old RX8 Should even out .

Resale?

No wonder I have ended up with 8 cars. I NEVER resell a car.
Anyhow cars started at 60,000 now selling for 40,000 I guess the worst is already over.
Now what mods can I do for 20,000 that it would cost me to buy a NEW one?????
Hymee where is the supercharger

Cars aren't an investment. Forget about resale - just enjoy it and cop the hit when it's time to move it on. You can either afford to play or you can't.

As for mods, provided they're not extreme and your taste in rims isn't too way out, I don't think they will have a huge effect on resale. Just might take a little longer to find the buyer who wants your chosen combo of mods.

Eventually, the 8 will find a base level, like 200SX's and other Jap performance cars.

to be honest I didn't think about resale value when I bought the car, nor do I think about resale value when I MOD. I bought the car to have fun in. Whenever the time comes for a new car (years down the line) I would expect to be in a financial situation where getting the top dollar for my used car wouldnt be a priority. Nothing is set in stone anyways.

I'm not worried about re-sale....it's not an Alfa for gods sake...they sell you a bucket as you drive out to catch what little re-sale you'll have!!

Mod the car enjoy it and never look at it as an investment....investments only come in bricks and mortar or stocks and bonds...

Go get your rims and your springs and have some fun. For someone so young you are really serious!

I haven't told Max but in 3 years I might sell him and get another one! See he's getting depreciated by the accountant...that's how to do it. Daily driver. work pays for the fuel and the car and I get the $$ back when I come to sell..not much but I don't worry about re-sale. I'm in sales and figure I should be able to sell it easily if I want to!!

But everyday I drive to work and think about mods and then think nah will leave this one stock and see what happens in the future.

MissyK: guys do exist that love cars and women that love cars, you are the rare one!!
