replicating a discontinued kit??

does anyone know the rules on replicating a discontinued kit?? say the company shut down for their own reasons and they stopped producing their kit but you really liked it but can't get your hands on one. if i could get my hands one one kit, would i be able to replicate it and make one, without stealing their name of course, without getting into any trouble? or are there papers and contracts that would need to be signed?

People replicate body kits all the time. There aren't really any "rules."

yeah that's what i was thinking too. but i'm not too sure if those replica companies consulted with the original companies before hand. just making 100% sure that i won't get into any trouble x.x

i dont know if any company would agree to another company making a replica of their product and selling it for a lower price.

just curious, what kit exactly are you considering on replicating?

I had that thought in the back of my head too. Like if the original manufacturer doesn't want people making replicas of their products, how come the replica brands don't get shut down by the originals, right?

And I wanted to do the tsunami kit. I can get a friend to produce them, but only if you guys are interested.

Depends on copyright laws and how much money the original manufacturer wants to spend on lawyers.

not to mention the cost of materials to do a one off replica for yourself would be way more than the cost of an existing replica that's already on a shelf somewhere waiting to be bought.

right so he's probably thinking he could get one for himself really cheap if he sold a few. but he'll end up paying for it all and not sell any.

Yeppers. Making this thing out of fiberglass ran about $25 in materials, just for the main shell. A bumper will be a lot more expensive, because of size and that it would be almost impossible to make a mold out of plaster like we did.

shine makes an autobahn replica. i had one. was pretty happy with it too. they're similar but not the same. i don't know anyone that makes a tsunami replica though. it'd be awesome if someone linked me. i was only considering this because i've never heard of a tsunami replica and maybe some other people would be interested also. i can actually have one made for pretty cheap. definitely cheaper in comparison to that that ipod dock. but if there's already a tsunami rep, i would reconsider hahah.
