Replaced gas cap 4+ weeks ago and CEL is still on
I had a faulty gas cap which caused a CEL. The dealership gave me a new one 4 weeks ago and told me that it will take a few starts for the CEL to go away. Is it normal for it to take more then 4 weeks for the CEL to go away?
I brought it in and they told me they need a new cap but did not have one in stock. They then told me they would call me when they got the part. When I left the dealer that day the CEL was gone because of the tinkering they did. When I went back to let the dealer install the new cap my CEL came on after I started the car again at home with the new cap.
I've had the CEL come on twice since I've had the car and both times it was the gas cap. Oh yeah, they also pointed out they noticed I turned the traction control off on the last visit for this problem. During this most recent time that I took it in I asked them what I could do to avoid this from occuring in the future and they told me "after you turn it and get a few clicks turn it back as if you were taking it back off then tighten it again". I don't really know if it works but I haven't had a CEL since I've been doing this so I can only assume this helps with the problem!
