Reliability Quest - New ignition coils
Reliability Quest - New ignition coils
Rebuilt engine -check
Cooling system -check
New OEM Cat -check
New plugs/wires -check
It's time to give the coils some attention.
I've done some research on this site and am 90% decided to go with BHR.
But before I do, are there any other 3rd party coils that are comparable in terms of reliability and ease of install?
As a side note, I can understand that Mazda wanted to save some money when deciding to use these junk coils, but these things are a *serious* downgrade. The 28 year old coils on my RX7 are still going strong after literally *hundreds* of thousands of miles.

I think there are some IGN coils that are supposed to be reliable also (based on Rx7 information), but there are only a few ppl who have used them on the 8 from what I have read. They are more expensive and the BHR coils should handle any power improvements you can add so unless you want to spend the $$ I don't see why you wouldnt just use the BHR's.

Worth a read.

All of your problems are solved. Ignition issues plaguing the 8 are completely resolved forever at any power level you can get out of a renesis from stock to boosted motors. These are THE ONLY coils we'd ever put on a rotary, hands down.

I personally love my BHR kit.
I've also driven two 8s with both kits (both had new engines at same time, and identical mods minus the ignition, two different midpipes) and still prefer my BHR.
At first I wanted to switch kits, no lie.. but after driving both a bit more, I decided I liked the way mine felt with the BHR kit better.
Just my opinion though.

As far as reliability goes (which is the entire point of this thread) have any of you been over to rx7club? Or researched the IGN-1a ignition coils? To be blunt, the reliability of these coils is completely documented in much much worse conditions for the last 5 years in volume and for many years befor that for pioneers using these coils. You can argue power numbers all you want, but to call into question the fact that they are dead on reliable, with years of testing and abuse on the rotary and just shows your lack of research.
