Recall for '04 RX-8

Just FYI guys, if you haven't gotten it done yet. Mazda put a recall out for the passenger side airbags and an upgrade for the PCM (i think that's the thing) to improve fuel economy and give a little boost to low end power. I had both performed today. Needless to say, I saw a little bit better response in the low end of the RPM spectrum. I'll post about the added fuel economy once I burn through this tank of gas.

I've got the work order out in the car, so I'll edit this in a bit to tell you all what the recall numbers are. Enjoy.

You're a bit late- the recall notifications were sent out way back around February.... there shouldn't even be any 8s out there without this work already completed.

No I didn't. I brought it into the dealer because I was only getting 12-13mpg even with keeping the RPM's under 5k and driving with DSC and Traction Control off. When your dealer runs your VIN their computer should come up with a list of recalls that need to be performed for your vehicle.

ETA on those recall numbers is about 5 min

Really? I just bought my RX-8 in July '04. I'm surprised they weren't performed already. Well, here's a list of what they did to my 8:

Perform Recall MSP04 Engine No Start, Lack of Power.
Perform Recall 1604B Passenger Front Air Bag.

I guess if you haven't had them done, get them done, or at least call the dealer and ask.

Au contraire -- I've had the airbag fix and the exhaust shield, but I haven't been back yet for my M flash. I'm coming up on 10K miles very shortly though, so I'll get it done when I go in for my oil change.

Speaking of 10K miles -- is there anything besides the oil change that I should make sure they do?

Well, there have been exactly two recalls for the 8, but you've only got one of them above. The two official recalls are for the passenger air bag wiring, and for the transmission damper. MSP04 is NOT a recall - MSP stands for Mazda Special Program, and it's just a dealer advisory. Go ahead, check the recall records at NHTSA if you don't believe me! Seriously - if that's what the dealer wrote, they wrote wrong.

Regards,
Gordon

I never received the recall letter, but I learned about it as soon as it came out coz of this forum. Fortunately, it wasn't long before I would check in for my 3000-mile service.

Maple Shade Mazda in Maple Shade, New Jersey is where I bought my 8. I really don't have any complaints about the dealership other than they are not Mazdaspeed certified (have to go into Philadelphia, PA to find a MS dealer). Great bunch of people there. Maybe that particular recall slipped through the cracks.

If any dealer sold you an RX-8 in July '04 without doing this recall they broke the law. I'm sure they're nice people, but that doesnt guarantee they're competent.

This isn't unusual BTW. The RX-8 knowledge on this forum far exceeds that of most dealerships.

I urge you to check out the full list of TSB's and recall(s) that may apply to your vehicle. They're in the links posted by brothervoodoo above. The odds are high that there are several TSB's for your car that weren't done either.

Check out the DIY threads in the Tech Forum too. There's valuable info there that you'll never hear from any dealer, including low cost things you can do to protect your car (eg, oil cooler/radiator screens).

Thanks for the information SpinninAgain!. I looked at the TSB's and recall(s) that may apply. Looks like I am up to date now. I'll check out those DIY threads tonight.
