Well I don't have lots of lights in my garage. In fact, I don't have any lights in my garage. In fact, I don't have a garage. So I'm trying to do this by the weak light of the service station. Not so bad during daylight, but you don't get much of that in New England in winter.

You people can poo-poo all you want about reading a dipstick not being a hard thing, but I'm telling you, this is the only car I've ever had difficulty reading it on.

One other thing to try. If the paper towel I used to clean it off is light-colored enough, then I touch the dipstick lightly to a clean section of the paper towel. By holding the dipstick next to the paper towel I can see how high the oil mark on the towel comes up the stick.

Hey, that's not a half-bad idea. I'm gonna try that...

One more idea for you...I have read on another dipstick post (double meaning) that you can rough up your dipstick (ouch) with sandpaper which gives it texture and therefore making it easier to read. It will naturally become easier to read with age as well. Hope this helps your dipstick concerns.

Seacrest. . . out.
