Yeah, you and I are probably describing the same thing. My M3 was an E36, but I've heard similar comments from a friend of mine who has owned more modern M cars and driven almost everything the M division has produced. He tells me those handling characteristics are totally normal for stock M cars. I think it's because they're set up to have a cushion of understeer at the limit, and/or because they're more oriented toward putting power down.

 

And a car that feels stable is also going to appeal to more people who might buy a BMW, it makes you think the car is more capable when it feels stable and undramatic even when it's almost breaking traction.
