It actually was a dangerous situation, as it was hanging by the wires for about 1 minute before finally falling in my lap and frying out the electronics. I actually blew through a stop sign by accident - luckily in a quiet residential neighborhood in the middle of the day so nothing happened.

I wonder if I could replace the fuse before the visor so my stereo works through the weekend. I'm not due to take it in to the dealer until Monday.

Maybe you had your winter visor installed? It always confuses me when I see posts like this. Somehow I have managed to keep my 8 for three years in the desert where we see 100+ temps most of the summer and nothing has ever melted in my car.

I'm guessing the melting is the result of a short circuit, and not the ambiant temperature. This should definatly be reported to the NTSB. It is a safety issue.

I just think it seems to big of a coincidence that it was melty after three days of 100-degree heat. Unfortunately, my work parking lot is totally uncovered and no trees - so I have to have my car out there during the hottest part of the day. I do use a window shade and vent the top with the sunroof, but on Wednesday I did not since it was going to be a relatively "cool" 96

I am curious - should I try to change out a fuse and see if I can get my stereo and advanced key system working before taking it to the dealer, or should I play it safe and let them handle everything under warranty? Opinions welcome!

I would take it to the dealer... if there's still a short, you'll just blow another fuse, and a surge caused by that could damage other electronics.

At work now, so I don't have access to the wiring diagrams to see if this all makes sense - but I bet it does. All the items you described as going out when the visor bombed were probably served by the same fuse....

bummer!

[Edit]
Yup - looks like the 15A "Room" fuse serves all these systems, so, what happened to you makes sense. If you're handy w/ electrical stuff - see if you can separate the wires and tape them off, then replace the fuse. Otherwise, I stand by my original advice - let the dealer fix it....

it's not melting per se.. the plastic just gets soft and the visor will split along the seams. soemtime it's just a crack. other times though it has come all apart and falls into pieces.
