Preorder finalization date brought forward
Just had a call from the New Car manager at Mazda South. Apparently, Mazda has brought forward the date when all preorders have to be finalized. They had originally been told that color and options could be altered until the middle of March, but that cutoff date has been changed to the end of this week! I had hoped to finalize my color choice after seeing them at the Houston Auto Show, but now I have to take the plunge. I settled on Winning Blue.
On the upside, he told me that they still have four quota unaccounted for, and has offered to order one of them as a Yellow Sport if there's still any free at the cutoff, so that I can have my choice when they arrive. It's nice to be on such good terms with your dealer.

There most likely won't be one at the Houston Auto Show.. I will post the group the final word later this week.
The Titanium was scheduled to be here, howver has been diverted to St. Louis and then on to New York instead.
There is still hope, the Gulf Coast Region marketing rep is working hard to get us our RX-8 to see in Texas.

I'm glad to hear that the Titanium has been diverted to St. Louis. That's the color I ordered without seeing it in person, and since I live in St. Louis I'll be able to go see it in person. WOO HOO!! I was afraid they would have that nasty red one here.....sorry red lovers.

DrKillJoY- Maybe they'll have one in Dallas since that show is at the end of March.
What happens if I order after the end of this week? Will there be less choices of color?

usually what happens is 2 things...
a. you can order your car the way you want.. and wait... in excess of 6 months for other car purchases I have dealt with.
b. you have buy what is avalible. after the initial pre-orders.. Mazda will build cars based on sales expectations.. there will be a certain percentage of each color/trim/etc made.
Of that percentage your dealer will get a few of each model as negotiated by the sales manager and Mazda NAO.
The cars that get to the dealer, that do not have deposits on them are what you will have to choose from...sure there are going to be cars at other dealers you can have shipped to you... but finding the car you want.. rather than having it built for you might be a bit of a pain in the a$$.
Good Luck

Some where it said that after you submit your preorder you could sumbit changes, but depending on the timing and what it was that you were changing it might not happen.
To me what was said to eccles would mean that any changes that you wanted to make to a 1st allocation preorder has to be submitted by the end of this week.
I would think that Mazda would not cut off the 2nd and 3rd sets of preorders that quickly with out notifying the public in some manner.
Although these are just my thoughts and views, I could be wrong :D

They may have moved the preorder date forward because they are starting production sooner then expected. I spoke with my dealer today and he said on his inventory sheet that he recieved this morning that my car (#1 slot at my dealer) is slated to arrive the first week of April. Since previously they were expecting at least June perhaps Mazda has moved forward to release the internet preordered cars much sooner then general production vehicles. Just a guess.

I wouldn't count on the April delivery. You just set yourself up for dissappointment, when April comes along and there's no car. I just tell myself it will be deliver in June. If it comes sooner then great, if not then no tears.

Totally agree on the April thing - just because my dealer told me first week of April doesn't mean I am buying it honestly. VW told us (the dealer) the New Beetle covert would be released November of two years ago and changed the date at least 5 times since then so I believe it when I see it.

MNAO's response
I wrote to rx8orders@mazdausa.com, commenting on my unease that the cutoff had been brought forward. Here's the relevant part of their response:
They made no attempt to address the issue of it having been brought forward, and went on to suggest that I could view the colors on the build-your-own order site. Yeah, right, like those are accurate representations of the actual colors.
I'm also amused that they suggest discussing color, options and packages with the dealer. Hell, we know more about this car than they do! The folks at Mazda South haven't even seen the Press Kit - I'm going to take them a copy on CD-ROM next time I'm down there.
Your dealer may request to change certain items after your request has been submitted to the factory. However, changes may or may not be accepted depending on the type of change and when it is requested relative to the production date. We strongly encourage customers to fully discuss Mazda RX-8 colors, options and packages with their dealer when placing their order at the dealership.
Because the necessary parts need to be ordered in advance and due to the volume of orders, it is recommended that the final orders are received by the specified time. Doing so will ensure that your order is included in preorder production. Having the finalized orders in advance will allow the factory to continue with production on schedule and enable them to ready the options and features, per your selection, for the production of your vehicle.

it would be nice though to drive the car to the movie theatre to see the movie. imagine all the people gawking at your car on the way out:D maybe the movie theatre or a local dealer would even kick a couple dollars someone's way to park the car right in front of the place on opening night

Does anyone know if the cutoff date really was last week? The Mazda website, at least as of last night, still said March 7, and listed dates as though there were going to be several waves of preorders arriving starting in June and going through October, depending on when you ordered your car.
I very badly want to order my car, expecially before the movie comes out, but as we are in the process of looking for a house, I was afraid to order something that might come in late may-early june if we haven't moved yet, because I can't risk screwing up a mortgage application. I think I could safely take delivery in late July or early August (if we're not in a house then, screw it- I WANT my car)- so I'd love to go order one about the first of March.
But can I do this or not? Does anyone know what's going on with the preorders?
