Portland, OR & Vancouver owners I got my L Flash todat
Hi Guys
Happy to report I got my L flash today at Ron Tonkin. Great service. I had to use the flood excuse, and after agreeing to call the Mazda tech line, they reporgrammed my PCM with the latest update. Observations so far in the 1st 50 miles:
1-WOW
2-WOW...The car is so much smoother. It appears to have more power, but can be sure until use Gtech this weekend.
3- Shifting is much smoother, it appears RPM's do not drop as fast therfore resulting in smoother quicker shifts.
4- As for gas mileage it appears the needle dropped only couple of ticks after 50 miles from full, before it would have been @ 3/4 tick mark with 50 miles. I believe I will get 70-75 miles before hitting 3/4 mark. If this holds, it will be awsome. It is too early to judge as these gauges are not very accurate, but I will report back when I put on more miles.
My advise, get the update.
I am going to call my service adviser and rave about how great the car is with new update, to enable all my RX-8 an easier time to get it. If you would like I can give you the advisor name so you do not have to deal with usual stare everyone is getting when talking about the L flash. Please email me if you need help or advise of how to get it.

Thanks for the report.
One comment: In similar threads, lots of people said "Looks like mileage has improved, I'll let you know later" then they never report back. How about a few of you who have run complete tankfuls with the L mod, let the rest of us know what mileage you're getting, both before and after the mod.
Rock on!

The L flash is an update to your ECU. They reporgram your ECU. Depending when you bought your car you will have a certain version number, similar to a computer software. Most people have the "K" revision. The "L" revision came out in February, and I do believe they are up "M" now. Starting from the "L" revision, they leaned out the mixture at lower RPM, which helped with Fuel Mileage, and low end power. In addition the car runs much smoother, and shifts easier. Hope this helps

I think you only see the difference in gas mileage if you keep your RPM below 4500. The L flash leans the mixture at low to med range RPM. The savings will be when driving on the highway. I am still gathering data and will report soon. Silvercloud is correct, it is more fun now, and much smoother
