Question Picking up my new '06 RX8 Tomorrow and I have Questions

Hey I just bought a new leftover 2006 RX8 on a local dealer lot a couple days ago and I am picking it up tomorrow.

Apparently it has been sitting out in their vehicle lot for the past 1.5 years, exposed to rain, snow, freezing temperatures and boiling hot summers...

Is there anything I should be concerned about when picking it up?

What, specifically, should I ask the dealer with regard to the latest up-to-date flashes for the onboard systems... What are the latest versions of these flashes?

Are there any other issues I should mention before I actually take possession of the vehicle?...like possible compliance with past recalls. I kno that the 2004/2005 models were recalled in August 2006, and my car was most likely manufactured before that date...

Any help would be appreciated...Thanks!

Ask them to check for a complete list of recalls for the vehicle and make sure they are done... Also, during the PDI (pre delivery inspection), they are supposed to have completed certain Service Bulletins, (like updated battery and starter, etc)...

Also, after you buy the car, I would wax it immediately knowing that it's been sitting outside for so long

what trim did u get? (ie, base, sport, touring, grand touring)

if u got grand touring, then u might wanna look at the leather and check for dryness and or cracking. prolonged sun exposure + leather = bg. i would also check the rubber lining around all the windows and see if those are cracked/ worn. u'll probably need to do an exterior detail + wax to get rid of minor paint imperfections as well. maybe see if the dealer will pay for it.

congrats & welcome nonetheless.

I opted for the paint protection package, rust proofing, underbody protection and Leather protection...I got a spectacular deal on the car and decided to do all of these things simply because it was exposed to the elements...Probably a waste of money but I get a lifetime warranty against rust and paint issues.

Also...they gave me free lifetime maintenance (oil and whatnot) including car washing and waxing...

I live in Canada and I was told by a friend to get a list of "Liquidations & Damages" from them to check for any possible issues with the vehicle and the RX8...I'll be requesting that.

It's good to be here.

What about the engine and drivetrain...should I be concerned that it was sitting idle for so long?

I'd be skeptical that it hasn't been sold and returned for various reasons. That's a long time to sit on a lot- almost unheard-of. Mileage?

I'd be concerned if it wasn't run at least once a week, just to get some lubrication in the engine and drivetrain.

Request an oil and fluid change before you drive it off, since they're paying for it anyway.
Make sure to check for waterspots on the paint and the B pillars. The black will show spots and they're a pain and a half to get out.

Other then that and everything else people have mentioned, you should be good to go. Enjoy your new 8!

well when i first looked at it the battery was dead, but the salesman reassured me that it was brand new; there was plastic covering the leather like all the other new cars...the terms of my agreement state it is a new vehicle, not used and if the kilometers are abnormally high I would surely challenge the agreement...

I'm in the USA, and in my state, a dealer is allowed to sell a car as "new" if it has under 1,200 miles on it. (That's almost 2000km)

I hope it's problem-free; if so, I know you will love your new car. Enjoy!

The salesman first told me the mileage was 0...I just called him again to confirm that...He said its a brand new car, no mileage. I suggested it might have been returned before, and he replied with a no. Hopefully everything will work out.

Not sure if I read the trim you got, but one issues with my 06 ( that I got about 6 weeks ago) was the battery in the remotes only lasted about 3 weeks. Ask them to put new ones in.

Don't worry about anything. I got an 06 that had sat for a long time too. No problems. They can't sell you a car "new" that's been titled to someone else, so again, don't worry. It hasn't been returned, the dealer just ordered too many 06s! As long as there aren't too many test miles on it you are fine. Mine had 55 miles at delivery, but that's what you get when you buy a leftover. I got a super deal on it so I don't care anyway! You should be getting a great deal too, but i think you gave it right back with all the treatments and proofings. Those are wastes of money.

The mileage is *literally* zero? Was it dropped onto the lot straight from Heaven?

In all seriousness...is it automatic? Or maybe the dealer was greedy and wouldn't bargain on the price? I just wonder why it took them so long to sell it. I really like how the RX-8 looks in white (but my wife didn't so I went with a color we both liked: red).

Anyways, congrats on your purchase! I keep second-guessing my decision to not go with leather...it looks rich, but it made my back sweaty when I played with an '05 recently in some recent hot & humid days in PA. And I preferred more headroom, so that meant that I needed to go with the base Sport model to lose the sunroof (and gain a bit of headroom).

I also bought an 8 that sat for 8 months before even being started. battery was completely dead, 6 miles on the tick. Got $7K knocked off the tag right off the bat for being "last years model". LoL...never seen a bigger steal in my life.

I wouldn't be concerned about the battery at this moment...it's not nessicarily an omnious sign or anything.

Few things to check with. As if the emissions reflash has been done yet. Being an 06, it probably has, but just double check. IF NOT, many on here (including myself) think it has caused worse mileage, but that's not confirmed. I'd look into the threads around here deeper if your car HASN'T had it done yet.

Other then that, i think you're lookin good to go! Enjoy her!

Yea I got a fabulous deal...it is the only reason I bought it.

Initially, i was looking for an '04/'05 G35, but I found this gem at a mazda dealership in the same automall as the infiniti.

I always wanted but could never afford a new car...and I hate buying used because there is always some compromise I have to make to enjoy the vehicle.

Fortunately, the 2008 lineup is coming in and the dealership is pushing to get rid of its 2007s... naturally this leftover 2006 was a steal.

I think I am gonna shop for all of my cars this way...as long as the model is not being redesigned anytime soon, just look for a leftover new vehicle from the last year and buy it before the next year's model is released. It's a rare scenario but it means no compromise and a good price (and you can really haggle on it).

Dealers are desperate to sell the old models.

Anand, I was in a similar position. I was all but decided on a used G35...until I drove one and then drove a used RX-8 later that same day. The G35 (granted, it was an automatic) left me feeling, "meh." When I later drove a 2005 RX-8, my wife commented during the test drive that I had a smile on my face the whole time.

you would think so especially since their mazda dealer closed down in my area and they probably didnt want to have to move it. i sure hope you got a fabuloso deal because i was looking at an 06 shinka with 30 miles and they wanted NEW price for it , like 07 new price. I hope to find some deal like that because i want it new because of the benefits u said.

have fun

Great to hear you're happy with your purchase. I too found an '06 leftover back in March. The dealer I got it from actually just became a Mazda dealer in Nov '06 and honestly they really didn't realize what they were sitting on. Mine is a Shinka and it had 35 miles on it. I drove 70 miles out of state to go get it and it was worth every mile. With the Mazda incentives at the time, along with the dealer cuts I drove away very pleased. I almost picked up an '07 GT the week before, but I walked away when that dealer wanted me to give them my SPEC-V basically for free. A couple of days later I end up tracking down this Shinka (much nicer in my opinion) and this dealer gives me $3,000 more for my Spec-V. Although I wouldn't drive 70 miles out of my way for just any car, this was a trip that was worth it.
Hopefully we'll all have many years/miles of head turning fun! Give us a reliability update down the road.
