Took the 8 out last night to the south end of boston I live in the north shore in Revere about 12 miles north. On the way home I was <redacted> and basically had it in third gear at 7-9k RPM for about 15-20 minutes. After i felt the car seemed smoother and more "torky". This morning after letting it warm up and was on my way to work it feels like it wants to screw like a bat out of hell.

Normal i take it?

 

Hard to say. Giving the engine a good thrashing once in awhile isn't a bad thing.

 

1. I wouldn't talk about street racing. It's against forum rules.
2. High revving is exactly what this engine likes. It's not the best for gas mileage, but keeping the rpm's above 7k for a bit is good, as it opens up all of the ports in the engine and clears them out.
You probably had a lot of gunk in your engine

 

Be careful of keeping it up there for too long. Generates alot of heat and our cooling system can't keep up.

But yes, a day at the track or autocross usually has a smoother running engine for the drive home.

 

I've seen all kinds of posting about cleaning out the motor with some high RPMS but i didn't realize it would make that big a difference.

I've read the big first time owners sticky more then once and follow it as best i can. I open it up a few times a day but only for a minute or two on my ride to work and home since I jump on the highway.

Always let it warm up before driving
1qt of oil every 1000 miles
replaced the cats once i noticed something wasn't right
never shut it off unless its warmed up
how to properly complete the deflooding process if it ever gets shut off early

I've studied it all quite well

 

ha sorry OP, I wasn't pointing that directly towards you. It was a general statement.

 

I know what you mean I've read some pretty outrageous explainations from people on how they maintain and operate the 8.

WAY off base from the sticky.

 

Most of that is people remembering only fractions or taking one small piece an running with it in the wrong direction. Or people that only operate their RX-8 under very limited circumstances, which correctly invalidates some or all of the guidelines, since the guidelines are for people that drive their 8 across a wide range of environments, seasons, maintenance, behaviors, etc... And the assumption is that new owners are more general drivers.

 

"1qt of oil every 1000 miles".................except for that statement. Here's and idea, why not check it and fill when needed to the appropriate level?
The way you wrote that implies you jump a qt. in every 1k miles regardless. I certainly hope not.

 

Of course i check it and thats EXACTLY where it lies, 1QT every 1000k miles

I work on cars for fun and this is going to be a new project for me and something new to learn.

At my job i have every tool available including a lift and my father in law has a shop in his garage that i use.

I'm getting there....
Once my extended warrenty is over and its paid off that engine is coming right out to be rebuilt as strong as i can possibly make it.
I would like to boost it (the right way) and get apex seals that can handle the pressure and still have it as my DD doing about 7-10k miles a year.
No crazy amounts of boost just enough to give me about 350 at the motor and ill be satisfied.

 

^ Good luck with that. Anyway, how much more horsepower you need, and what are your plans to get that boost you need?

 

I'm used to an srt8 so it feels a little under powered to me in a straight line.
I was on one of the vendors seeing seals that can handle more power but I got a lot of research to go before I put with a turbo or SC on it.

 

Straight line....I hear you. Curves are delightful though.
Research is your only redemption when planning to mod.
I didn't wait for the warranty to go, 2 weeks of having the car I knew I had good internals to work with, so I built it. I didn't have any intentions for FI though.

Around corners the cars practically unmatched, atleast with anything ive driven even the corvettes ar work dont feel as good around corners. I use to have a car that was SC'd so im fimiliar with them but i think it would be better to go turbo with this one for a few reasons but one is the fact that i can control the PSI.

 

If you go too high with the HP and torque, you'll have to change out the rear end.
Do some searching when you get serious about it.
