yeah i'm 95% city and 5% highway. most of everything i travel to is only about 6-7 miles between each other so every trip i make is short and in between stop lights. i drive semi agressively (first gear goes to 5k, second to 4k third to 3k, then to 6th)

i like to enjoy driving my car, i'm not going to save myself 6 bucks a week to baby my car. i could work an extra hour (subway *sigh*) and drive my car spiritedly for a whole week. or i could leave an hour early and baby my car.

i dono, id rather work an hour.

Some things never change

I haven’t really looked at rx8club for a year and I come back to find that people are still talking about miles/tank. Learn to calculate MPG!!!!! The tank reads empty at around 12 gal but you can run it until it will take 16 gal.

217/12 = 18 MPG – Normal in winter
217/16 = 13.5 MPG – Pretty low.
Which is it?

Average ~ 270 mi / tank 80% Highway 20% City at an AVG speed of 70 - 80 MPH on highway. However, I drove to NYC the other day from MD and only got 200 mi / tank (driving AVG 80 - 90 MPH) LOL ... Needed to stop and fill the tank otherwise i would have not make it =/. Sad but True .

I think this is key - driving slow (under 30) and traffic lights kills rotary gas mileage more than driving fast. I almost always get about 21 mpg; the sub 20 exceptions are when I got caught in traffic jams for extended periods of time.

202.7 meters for only 13.5 grams of gas isn't bad.

your air filter might be dirty, 15mpg isn't horrible if you like driving your car hard and drive in a lot of traffic.

I got about 270 miles on my last tank of gas actually, but only because 150 miles of that was highway. I had just under a quarter tank when i finally filled it.

200 to 211ish before the E light comes on. Mostly short 4-5 mile trips to work and back. Some back roads so not to many lights and mostly at 40ish mph. I pre mix, and usually do the "carbon delete" mod 3 to 5 times a week.

Fill ups are usually at 12.82 to 13.0 gallons. Not the nominal 13.5 gallons. Maybe my E light likes to come earlier.

I haven't checked MPG since I"m still in the "having fun with my new 8" phase.

But when I do check: should I get better or worse than average with a brand new 2008?

Realist fill up are about 14 gals so if your driving 100% highway your looking at between 252 to 308 at best. Now you add in some city driving and that number drops dramatically.

I just filled up 13.5 gallons and had 148 miles on the tripometer, all city. I have never seen better then 260.

Christ, only 200 miles per tank!?! What RX-8 are you driving; that indeed WOULD be a gas guzzler! Totally unacceptable in my book. I feel sorry for you—I've never gotten less than 270 miles, 290-300 is typical.

In my usual city-only driving I usually get 275-300 km (171-186 miles) before the light comes on. I've kept a spreadsheet tracking my mileage since I bought the car and it is pretty consistently 13-15 mpg. I have traveled 15697.4 km since I bought the car and have put in 2526.1 litres of gas. That's an average of 16.09 litres/100 km or 14.62 mpg. I did get 21.02 mpg on the drive to Indianapolis this past summer.

I've never given 2 ***** about the fuel economy in any of my others cars, yet I obsessively track the mileage of the 8 and find myself staring at the fuel gauge altogether too much.

Why?? Could it be that the 8's mileage is just that bad? Could it be the constant carping on the board about it?

No...I have concluded that it is (a) because the 8 has a small tank for a car with such poor fuel economy and, more importantly, (b) there are so many ticks on the fuel gauge that it IS possible to watch the needle go down!

60L is not a small size tank for a car like an Rx8; most sports cars of its size have the same. The fuel needle drops quicker than other cars for the simple fact it chews through fuel at a higher rate than other cars....it's not a conspiracy, its the simple truth.

But yes, the Rx8 was the only car I've owned where you could actually see the needle drop before your eyes. Only a fanatic could live with one.

ha, maybe it's just your driving then. You should get a set of LS2 coils regardless of gas mileage and that might make you get better mileage.

10k miles exactly on the odo. 2007 GT manual. I drive 12 miles to work with a few stoplights. Just enough time to get the car warmed up and rev it a bit. I hit 9k RPM once every other day or so. Usually I spool it up to 5-6k in every gear, everyday.

I get EXACTLY 16.5 MPG, every week. I got 14 once when I was really getting into it. I've never seen 20.

The car gets horrendous gas mileage, but that's not way any of us bought it. If I had to drive 30 miles to work I'd have a daily beater- but I'm not giving up my 8.

The tank is the proper size for a sports car, just not THIS sports car. Another few gallons would certainly help matters considerably.

My commute is not bad traffic wise but I do hit a lot of lights so I do have a lot of idle time.
