Oil Consumption Survey
I recently purchased a 6-speed RX8. What is the typical experience with oil consumption out there? The sales guy said to check oil level at every fill up, but hasn't known anyone that every needed to top off the oil. So what is your experience?

You won't need to actually ADD oil at every other fillup - it's merely a good idea to check it that often.

I am using about 1 quart after 2000 miles it appears. I believe the distance from the low mark and the high mark on the oil dipstick equals 1.8 quarts if memory serves.
So after 2000 miles I was about 1/4 above the low mark after being at the high mark when I made note at delivery.
However I only have 3500 miles on my 8 now and have read threads where oil consumption improves as miles accumulate on vehicle?
my experiece so far.........

I'm at 1700 miles so far and the engine oil level is about half-way between the full and add lines on the stick. Planning to add a 1/2 quart to bring it back to full. I'm guessing less than a quart consumption between 3000 mile oil changes.

I check every 1000 miles. I'm just a few 100's shy of 5000 miles and have used 1 3/4 quarts. I've never had it get below the low tick on the dipstick, but this last check (3 days ago...checking level and quality since I'm expecting to take it in for its first oil change at 5Kmiles) I was 1/8" (3 mils for the metric dudes) above the low tick. Put in a whole quart. I don't normally fill it to the high tick...just keep it between the two.

I'm getting the free oil changes every 5000 miles. I've got a bit over 20,000 miles on my car. Last 5000 miles, I had to add 1 quart total. About a 1/2 qt every 2500 miles.

Hard to say. Car was delivered new overfilled. Two oil changes at the dealer and overfilled both times. Probably won't know for sure until I change the oil myself.
Just added about three ounces after 1600 miles since the last overfill er oil change.

over filled also
I have about 700 miles on our car...it too came from the dealer very overfilled....it's only now that it is at the upper marker. I was suprised to see the oil so full after taking delivery. Are there any issues with over filling or is it just a result of adding the recomended amount of oil during a change? I do however plan to to my own changes after the first dealer change.

6300 miles on the wifes 8. Never had to top off. When I change the oil, I have never filled it right up to the full mark either. I always leave it a smidge under. Just my preferance. Then again I changed the oil at 500 miles, 3500 miles, and will again at 7500 miles. After that I am going to change it every 5000 miles. At that point I may need to top it off. She doesn't drive it as hard as I would or as others do. So that contributes to a lower oil consumption for her.

I have 15000 miles on mine and I have added a total of 1.5 quarts. I'm getting my oil changed this week so it will be a long time till I need to worry about adding again. I'll be sure to check it just in case something loosens up though.

I have over 13k and have never added any oil. I just have the oil and filter changed at the dealer. So its 2.5-3k between changes, works for me. It's my 7th rotary. The oil consumtion depends on how deep you keep your foot in it. Race it and you wont even get 1k before you need a quart. It takes real disipline to stop yourself from redlineing it all the time. The rotary is electric!

The dealer is wrong. Check your oil every other fill up.
I use about a 1/4 of a quart every other fill up.
It's best to keep it topped off. Your oil is like a motorcycle. It has a tank that pumps the oil into the engine. It was designed to consume oil. It drops oil on to the points to prevent wear of the tips.

ZASKAR,
Do you wipe the dipstick before you read it? My friend said his engine never use oil but I take the dipstick out - it was full - but then I wipe it and put it back and pull it out to look again - it was below the L mark.
Also, you need to check oil in a warm engine.
I may sound like it is abnormal to see rotary on consuming oil but I think wheather the checking procedure is correct
