Ok guys i need advices... i put half a liter of oil in the car yesterday and put the rest on the carpet behing my seat, the bottle was capped tight ( or so i thought) Got home and saw that the cap was off and the oil all over the carpet. ( removed the top one but there was still quite a bit on the car carpet.) I sponged it and used scott towels. any idea as to how to clean it up so my kids don't step in a bit of oil every time?

 

Lot's of greasecutting dishsoap and scrubbing or just buy a new floor mat, which is what I would do.

Lots of Tuff Stuff cleaning foam, brush and a strong vaccum cleaner...

And next time put the oil container inside a plastic bag just in case

 

try some woolite or some type of carpet cleaner to get the stain out. i haven't tried OxyClean on an oil stain yet but it works wonders on other types of carpet stains. and to quote myself from P00man's thead about filling up your oil:


note that i said "trunk" carpet. never put an oil container in the passenger area of the car, you are just asking for trouble if you do.

 

Thanks guys, i would buy a new carpet if it was just the removable one but it did leak on the permanent car carpet. I'll try to get my dealer to replace my damaged carpet for free... we'll see .

Cleaning oil out of a carpet is not that big of deal so long as you get to it right away.

First thing you want to do is blot the excess oil with a towel (Bounty works well for this). Make sure you blot not rub! Rubbing will only make it worse.

Next, get a small scrub brush, like a veggie brush, and some Dawn (or Sun and Earth -- less harsh) dishwashing liquid. Squirt a small amount of the Dawn on the spot and then GENTLY scrub the spot for a good minute or two.

Let it sit for five minutes. Scrub again for another minute.

Using a warm, damp towel, blot up the soap and oil, making sure to change towels as they get soiled. Keep blotting the spot ( a little rubbing is ok too) until there appears to be no sign of oil on the carpet or the towels.

Lastly, using a dry towel, absorb as must moisture as possible, and then let the rest dry on its own.

If, after everything has dried you still have a spot, you can repeat the above steps or try a more agressive cleaner like Resolve.

Thanks MadRonnin, the goog thing about the carpet is that it's black so no stain is visible. I just don't want to have my kids come running in the house with oily shoes.

 

Really, oil cleans up pretty easy. Use pretty much any carpet cleaner to get it all up and you should be fine. Since there's no visible stain (black carpet) there's not much to worry about.

I've used auto upholstery/carpet cleaner that's a foam in a spray can with a scrub brush built into the tip - works great. Just spray and scrub, let dry, and vacuum. Done deal.

Now if you dumped a quart of gear oil in the back seat, I'd say sell the car .

Just motor oil, no gear stuff and only on the carpet, not the seat. the guys at the dealer sold me a bottle of kleen-flo brake and parts cleaner...??!
