Notchiness of 1-2 shift and so on...

So - I've started to notice that my 1st to 2nd gear is really notchy when im "playing" with the car. If im at a standstill and take off really fast, when i do the 1 to 2 shift its slower and has that notchy feel. I used to be able to shift fast enough to make the tires break loose and do a pretty good chirp. Now the only way to do that is to pull hard as **** on the shifter when going to 2nd (havnet been doing that in forever)

I dont know if this has anything to do with it, but there have been about 3 times I had a bad grind going from 2nd to 3rd and (in another instance) from 3rd to 4th at very high speed and high RPMs. I didnt know if this would effect the tranny at all and be causing the problem im experiencing?

Ive been thinking that the Richard Paul Short Shifter and some SS clutch lines might make this problem go away. Also note ive swapped tranny fluid to redline a few months ago and didnt have this problem back then.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Jeff

I will be listening to responses to this, as my '04 6spd has the same issues. However, I believe there are several threads about this already...so I would expect lots of "Use the search button" responses.

You probably bent the shift forks. RP SS wont' make this go away, in fact it will be worse. If the dealer likes you they might fix it under warranty but most likely will be called abuse. The forks were getting replaced on some 04's but I don't think the o5's are covered.

well i did some searching on the issues the RP short shifter resolves and i know the general consensus is that the shifter does increase the overall smoothness of shifts along with a shorter throw (obviously)

I just didn't find anything on the notchiness showing up after a while. I have almost 30K miles on my car and only have about 10K miles on the redline synthetic tranny fluid I put in.

Is there anyway to verify if you have a bent shift fork on your own?

Mine does the same thing. Only difference is it happens on the down shift also. It is going to the dealer on Monday for a list of repairs.

my shifting has become increasingly rough, or notchy. its not a problem for standard driving, but is noticeable nonetheless. i also have an 04 6speed. i plan to have my dealer check it out when my car is in for the recall

Are you sure the clutch is releasing fully?

I had a shifting problem on a BMW - it became hard to shift from one gear to the next. Turned out to be a bad clutch slave cylinder. A dealer felt he got some improvement by changing the oil, thought there was probably something bent inside, but we decided to let it ride for a while.

Eventually the clutch stopped releasing for starts (at least it needed to be pumped) but for several months the only symptom was hard shifts. Overhauling the cylinder fixed the problem completely.

Mine doesn't shift super smooth 1-2 and sometimes 2-3 when it is cold but I am not sure that it would necessarily be called notchy. More like trying to shift through thick mud or something. After I've driven it a mile or so, it is fine. Probably not the same problem you are having.

I am on the same boat. About to hit 30k and close to 15k on redline fluids. I figured that it was two options: 1st the fluid needs to be change as it has been a little over a year or second due to the weather slightly being cooler (living in new york).

I figured that it is probably the fluid, so I was just gonna change it at the 30k service. Hopefully it would be better.

If you take it to the dealer, don't tell them you switched the transmission fluid.

wow bunnygirl, after working the corner for money to buy your car, you must have more problems that anyone else on the entire planet. Please, everytime you have the same problem as somebody else God kills a seal. Please think of the seals and sell you car.

Thanks!
