Mine is closing on being nine years old, at about 61K miles (3 years ago it only had ~20K). Everything works fine. Original engine.
Only thing I had to replace (other than fluids, spark plugs and similar regular maintenance) were the tires. On my first replacement set after the OEM tires.

I've owned....14 or 15 cars (approximately).
My '05 6Mt RX-8 is tied with a mid 1990's era Civic EX as the MOST reliable car I've owned.
After test driving about a dozen or so cars over the last couple of years, I've yet to find a suitable replacement, and so I am guessing I'll be keeping my 8 for at least 10 years if not quite a bit longer.
Every time I've had a rental over the last 7 years, upon getting back into my 8, I realized how much I took for granted the steering, smooth motor, excellent brakes, and just fantastic driving dynamics. Every other car I've driven just feels sloppy by comparison.
Also, I've noticed many 'new' cars are cheaper in terms of interior materials, build quality and overall quality than the prior versions, as it seems quite a few manufacturers are 'de-contenting' their vehicles.
My goal is to get to 200,000+ miles on my 8.
