newbie -winter driving

I am looking to buy a rx8 this month and i was just wondering if any of you guys drive your rx8s in the winter time, I live in massachussetts and am a little skeptical, but i think i could get by with snow tires and some extra wieght in the trunk, what do you guys think? any advice

my main advice would be "try searching." i can see youre new to these forums, but if you post without searching, youre gonna get flamed... anyway, this topic has been discussed many times, and in fact, i posted a thread in this forum on the exact same topic a week ago... its about twenty posts below yours.

First..........................................

Second, the 8 does fine with good snow tires (Dunlop M3, Blizzaks, etc.) Extra weight in the trunk is useless. The only thing it gets you is wasted gas.

I don't have a driving problem in the winter time.
I just roll down the windows and enjoy the nice 80 degree day's. Actually get better gas mileage cause I can turn off the A/C.

The car is a sled in the winter with stock tires. I will be getting snow tires for this winter. So I havent personally experienced the car with snow tires, but most say that its not bad with a good set.

From Edmunds RX-8 Long-term test…

"Those who have to deal with slippery driving conditions will benefit from the RX-8's perfect 50/50 weight balance and available traction/stability control system. Throw a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks on this baby and you should be able to handle most anything winter throws your way."

Sigh, I already put my snow tires on. We dipped below freezing already and the stock tires turn into bricks below 40. Temps combined with rain and I was fearing turning into a hockey puck on the way to or from work.

Snow tires is all you need. I wouldn't put any extra weight in the trunk.

Get 17" rims so you can go to 215 width tire. Better yet, 205 width (Mazda3 17" rims work). The narrower the better the snow grip.

With DSC/TSC (since you have the sport package), it's easy to drive in the winter. It only gets stuck when the snow is deep (6"+).

I recommend getting a tires/wheel package from TireRack. This should inspire confidence.

Winter driving in a RWD is not that bad, I drove an RX-7 last winter will be driving an 8 this winter. Just drive slow, stay in a gear higher then what you might normally. Sometimes starting in second is better then first and enjoy the ride. And yes having good winter tires with some sidewall to them will be essential.
