Newbie vs Experience
#51
Strictly my opinion - I don't think this forum is that bad when it comes to bashing people. I consider myself a noob, and by all means no mechanic. Look at my posts/threads, I don't have much experience at all. I get flamed/bashed on all my threads/questions. You have to take it with a grain of salt and shrug it off. But I still learn.
I don't care that someone that I don't know nor will ever meet yells at me to search, because my questions get answered in the end by that someone who cared to answer my question.
I had 0 experience when I bought this car. I didnt even own a socket set. Since then I've put ton CAI, exhaust, and a pulley myself. And soon new plugs, and the ignition solution. I give 100% credit to the people of this forum on helping me become an enthusiast for my car.
My point is I've learned the hard way by not searching and getting flamed. It's how I learned. Now I know to search before I ask.
To me you'll never get rid of the stupid questions/threads. You'll never get rid of stupid people either. You'll also never get rid of ******** either, for everyone needs to poop sometime or other.

good post silver, and i agree with you. at times i feel bad for the new users here who ask questions about a car they know nothing about. but at the same time, those questions have been asked before.
but still no reason why the new user to have to be bashed for asking. there are times i wish they do search (google is my best friend) for their question, but i will not down them either. any how good post silver, glad some body felt the same way i do.

Hello everybody. I'm a newbie here. I've researched the basics of how forum
works and understand the potential of a simple search, and the galore of covered
topics. I haven't even thought of starting a new thread simply because every
thought I have of my new car becomes a page of search results. I recognize
names from this thread alone, I'd like to say thanks for your contributions so far.
I love my car, and it's great that I don't have to freak out about every little kink
that comes up, because I know it's gotta be covered here.

There's less flaming & nonsense now than there was when I joined 2+ years ago – though I've been avoiding the GD section for the most part.
There is a good right way and a wrong way to tell a new member to find the answer they need, or at least refine the question they ask. I don't understand the "elite" crap at all - there are those with more knowledge, but elite?? One fairly new member here who is very well respected has a quote that reads "Choose the harder right over the easier wrong." Every member makes that choice, then makes it obvious through their posted words what decision they made. It's not an idea that should only be considered when you're trying to make big decisions - it's daily life choices, too.
Such a wise f8@king noob!
Stop it. So humble. Where's that bullshit meter thingy . . .

OK, I have seen the need for this now and I want you guys to know that if it is used, It has to be because it's inevitable and can't be used to start a flamefest. It must be in the context of this thread and used as a last resort after all else has failed and the fertilizer has hit the ventilator.

Pretty much everything has already been said. I've been on here a little under 3 years and yet have less than 500 posts. Why? because there is so much information that has already been discussed that there is very little need to start a new thread.
Just want to add on to what swoope said about the search feature. I find it best to go advanced search for all dates and then search for titles only. This way it searches for threads with the keywords in the Title. This greatly narrows down the random garbage threads where there is just a mention of what you are looking for.
I try not to flame anybody for posting a stupid question but sometimes it needs to be done. There are those times when someone posts something so simple that a google search would turn up the answer not to mention the Mazda USA site or even their ******* owners manual.
Everyone needs to consider the following question, a question anyone who has been on here for awhile asks him/herself everytime a noob posts a dumb question:
If they don't try to help themselves then why should I?
That basically sums up why noobs get flamed.
I hope by typing this some new guy will realize that there is information here just waiting to be found. Maybe they will shut up and read instead of waiting for a silver spoon to come in and feed them their answer. Hopefully the experienced members who are against the flaming will understand the reason behind it, not just because we can, but because some people need that push to get off their *** and look for info instead of letting someone else do it for you.

OK about time to bump this again!
Can we please stop this useless function of "Photoshop/pic request" its getting sooooooo old. Figured it belonged in this topic since it appears to be associated with noobish behavior or an overall lazy attitude and promotes countless numbers of completely useless and meaningless threads,,,,

I said something similar in a thread the other day. Guy comes in and says he wants to get an AT and asks questions. First post or two are just complete bashes of him wanting an AT and blah blah....
I agree, if I was a new person, interested in this car and got those responses from the first replies on my first post, I'd leave.
this didn't have bashing because of the questions asked or anything of the sort. He was bashed from the get go just on the fact two little letters where stated in the thread (AT)

I have been reading the site since 05. Searched for a ton of stuff before I even considered posting. The search function on here is great but its def lacking a true keyword search like in most forums. Keyword search like "how to change oil" brings up about 200 threads some pertaining to what you put in and some not. Where the confusion begins is noob1 asks a full question on search and gets no returns or see that the Thread topic under the 200 doesn’t specifically state "how to change oil" to them that’s grounds for putting up a new thread to get a quick answer. Other sites like the sport bikes sites I'm on if you put in a search it would bring up every fitting part of that sentence in every thread/post that was ever posted. But I'm sure that conversion of a search function add on would be very time consuming. Or possibly putting headline in red letters at the top of the search page that states " PLEASE TRY KEY WORDS TO YOUR SEARCH VERSES ENTERING IN COMPLETE QUESTIONS FOR BESTER RESULTS" That’s just my opinion but it makes perfect sense to me to kill a lot of animosity and confusion with trying to find what you need when you have no idea what to specifically look for to get a quick answer.

i totally agree with you, the search function is very helpful but its not the best way to find something your looking for because it pulls up other "trash" in the process. then after that you have to go through countless pages of searched keywords that probably do not relate closely enough to the answer your looking for.
on the P/S requests though, i beg to differ. some people aren't as technologically inclined as some, therefore it really shouldn't be a reason to bash the user, just because he doesn't know how use photoshop.
but i do agree, some of the "older" members here are quite bashful on new members, them become quick to judge when they say they have an AT. its not a bad thing to tell them that MT is more fun, but some go a little further than that... seems kind of degrading.
