New RX8 owners: Winter Tires are a MUST !!!!!

So stupid me, I changed my winters back too summers last week. And guess what? Today it started snowing again FML, about 5 cm. So I figured why not just take the 8 with summer tires, 5cm is nothing. Ill be honest, I was being kind of lazy Cause my tires are in my basement and I hate carrying each one up the stairs and I figured it won't snow again since spring is here. So why not take the 8. Let me tell you, the 8 was driveable yes, but at 30 km/h LOL. If I touched the throttle heavily I would fish tail. It was pretty bad. I just hope to God this weather doesn't damage my summer tires

Moral of the story is new rx8 owners make sure you get snow tires it is an absolutely MUST !!!

I think Maryland is just about done with snow and I went through the entire season on Hankook V12s with my 8 as my DD. It was not fun and I won't be doing it again.

How are the roads up there now? I am leaving later today (like you I took my car out last weekend when it was nice) now heading back to Canada (Hamilton area) and debating the trip. Maryland is just wet, but driving through PA and NY seem kinda sketchy. Hoping I can just push through it and cross my fingers that the roads are clear or at least some what clear.

Ye it was bad. Heres what actually happened. I actually got stuck in a parking lot right. I got in perfectly fine but i guess the 2 hours i let my car sitting there, the potenzas hardened even more and lost grip. So i tried leaving but i moved literally 10 meters. I tried shoveling snow to inch my way out but it was still impossible. So i had to call someone to bring my blizzaks and i had to swap them in the parking lot. Huge lesson learned. Never EVER EVER ... did i say ever.... put summer tires on unless the temperature hits 7 degrees celsius constantly. I was being stupid and put them on too early. Oh well you learn from your mistakes.

Im 999999% sure it wouldnt have happened if i had my blizzaks on.

And this is why I still have my winter tires on. I'm waiting for it to just snow on us again....Silly weather.

the potenzeas are absolute SHIAT tires brand new with a full tread life. If you had any wear at all, no wonder you got stuck and had a bad time with them. Put something else on the car and don't look back.

I drove my rx8 in a light snow with summer tires and it did ok. One real complaint was the tires were hard and the ride was bumpy for a long time till they got warmed up.

Yeah, I was going to put my summers on this weekend after a nice warm week in the mid 70's - low 80's. Was going to give her a good clay bar + polish to boot as I thought the spring warm up was here. However, we're about to get a cold and wet snap with overnight lows in the 30's so I guess I'll be waiting a couple of more weeks at the least. I haven't tried it, but I wouldn't really trust my Federal Z's in wet conditions below 40 degrees.

Bummed...

I was fine with all season tires in central Illinois. It actually does better than my 3000GT ever did in the snow.

same thing happened to me in MAY last year! Get the summer tires and rims on and it snows 3 days later. That was the most stressful driving I've ever done. Lesson learned.

so these blizzaks are the ones to get? i've seen a few post and here in Central pa, we get hit or miss, but WNEP has been wrong the last few times... Like the Presidents Day winter storm, said 1-3, and we ended up with 9 lol

I had winters and summer sets for the awd, so it will be done with the rx8.

I was tempted this past weekend. It hit 13C (55f) and I did the first handwash of the season. 5 days later, snow storm. WTF!

New summer tires still in basement

First track day of the season coming up (weather permitting).
