He just bought an '04 RX-8. (Welcome!). The remote does not lock/unlock the doors. The battery is good. There are no blown fuses. Does anyone here have any ideas of what to try next, other than going to a Mazda dealer?

Sorry, but I can't be of any help. The whole operation of the remote frightens me.

I wonder what else he didn't check if he didn't realize the f-ing key fob didn't work. I do a 100 point check on any used car I ever buy. Frankly, I find it amazing how people go out and purchase a car a.) without doing any research about the car they are purchasing and b.) dont "kick the tires" so to speak. OP, if you just purchased the car I 'm sure you have a warranty. Call the dealership and have them replace the fob.

It might just not be programmed to his car. Maybe it got erased or something. I'm not sure. If you have two keys, there is a DIY on here on how to program it.

Just reprogram the key fob. There is a DIY on how to do it. Just search, or go to the DIY sub-forum.

EDIT: NVM Mazsurfer posted the link already lol.

I was going to try this when I bought my car - as I was told that the second key fob wasn't programmed, but right in the beginning it says:

"You MUST have at least two existing keys in order to add another new key. This will not work if you only have one good key, & want to add a new key. If you only have one good key(or have lost all keys) you will need to go to the dealer."

Sounds like you need two good keys to start in order program a third. Sounds like OP has one key, 2 at the most, but I dont know for sure.

I never even tried because of reading this.. but who knows, it might work. Otherwise OP might be looking at a trip to the dealership.

No you dont need 2 keys to program your key fob. You need 2 keys to program another key. My car only came with 1 key on the fob and I was able to program it just fine after I changed the battery in it.

This is what I used to do it:

Thanks. I gave it a shot with no luck. However, based on the visible use seen on the key fob that doesn't work, I'm willing to guess that it might be a dead battery. I ordered a new battery and will try it out when it comes in.

Ordered? They sell those at the grocery store here. I had a problem inside my remote. It seemed the metal tab on the bottom of the battery didn't stick out far enough to make a good connection, so I had to smack it around some every time I needed to use it. I took my car to the dealer for a coolant problem and they said they fixed the remote too, no idea what they did, but I haven't had a problem since.

They bent the tab ever so slightly to have it make better contact.
Must be very, very careful doing this as it will snap off real easy!

I tried doing that. He told me he just changed the battery, although I had already tried that before with no improvement, so they must have done something else. I even tried wedging a piece of a toothpick inside there pushing the battery towards the contact point, which worked for a while, but not permanently. Although this may not be the OP's problem at all. Just saying.

It was 3.50 plus tax for one at the battery store or 2 dollars shipped online for 5 batteries. I didn't need to do it today, so I can wait and I'll have a spare if my other fob needs one down the road.

You can program the lock/unlock part without two keys, but if you are wishing to program the acctual key (metal part used to start the car) you need two working keys to do that. I used the method posted on the wikianswers to program the lock/unlock however i found it on some program remotes site.

You're new here...Congrats and welcome.

You're new here....Congrats, welcome, and get used to the sarcasm. Once you get over the initial shock, you'll find it makes you a better person! Gotta love RX8club!

Maybe you can try looking in the DIY section. There's a thead there about programming your remote! Hahaha...Do EXACTLY as Mazurfer said then others eluded to but never viewed the very conveniently attached link. If this doesn't work, then consider going to the dealer.

I hope this was helpful and nice enough for you...IDIOT!!! Welcome again.

Get an aftermarket keyless entry system or fob for the 8. Mazda makes great cars, they make garbage FOB's. Mine were always broken, and never worked.

Put the new battery in and still wouldn't program. Key fob must be dead
