Smile New RX-8 owner

Hi folks, I'm the proud new owner of a black 07 RX-8 GS with the 6 speed auto. I did a lot of research before buying the car (much of it here) so I'm prepared for all the rotary "uniqueness"(:
I traded in my 04 Dodge Quad Cab Hemi RAM and sold my 01 Z06 Corvette. I was just tired of the outrageous insurnace on the Vette and it's 6 speed manual tranny. As for the truck, 12 MPG is bad anyway you look at it.
So far, I've got approx 2,000 KM on my 8 and I'm getting on average 23 mpg!! Coming from 12 mpg, I think I'm in heaven(: I really love this car, it handles great, looks awesome and it seats 4! What more can I ask?

Does the AT have some kind of shift functioning at least? Beyond ramming back and forth between D, D1, D2? What is redline for an Auto now?

You can shift it on steering wheel paddles or on the center console. No ramming between D, D1, D2, etc.

Redline on the auto is 7,500 RPM

Razz1 - The Vette insurnace was $2400 Cdn per year. However, the main reason I got rid of the Vette was I was tired of the manual tranny. In my opinion, the auto with the paddle shifters is a great compromise since I often drive in very heavy traffic for long periods. I did look at newer Vette's with the same auto/paddle shift setup, but even the 05's are still well over $50K Cdn. Too rich for me(:

I bet if you do a Google search, you can find all sorts of RX-8 pics. Mine is a black RX-8, bone stock, so you should be able to find lots to look at(:

Welcome to the club. Love to hear people trading in their big A$$ trucks for cars.

How do you feel about the acceleration compared to your Vette? Too bad about the insurance. Vettes really are nice cars.

The Z06 Vette is a beast. 385HP and 385TQ, six speed manual, 3.96 gears and weighs approx 3200 lbs. 0-60 times are about 4.3 seconds in theory. However, try to put that power to the ground and you've got some serious tire frying issues. It's not a car you "cruise" in, because you're always tempted to get on it. Truthfully, I like driving the RX-8 much more than the Vette. I know people will find that strange, but you have to live with the Vette for a while before you realize how tiring it is to drive. BTW, I do have a pic of the Vette, here yah go...

I understand where you're coming from with the "prefer the 8 over the Vette" mindset. Z06's were designed to just be fast. Making them just drive takes effort, which isn't something anyone wants to do when they're stuck in traffic. The 8 is definately more like a chameleon on the road, making itself fun & comfy during any driving condition.

BTW finding google pics of Stock, Black, RX-8s is FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE. Hell - even Mazda's website doesn't have ONE SINGLE PICTURE of a BB 8 (unless you go to "choose a color, but then you're looking at a CG black 8, not a real one...). When i got mine I wanted to show all my friends what it looked like, but I couldn't find any stock ones in black w/google...
...well, any decent ones, anyways. There are plenty of cellphone quality pics that look like they were taken by Ray Charles...

And why do you make your smileys with the parentheses first? is that a Canadian thing, or a You thing? Never seen (: it's always ...

There are some Vette guys hating you right now. I understand though. The 8 is so perfectly balanced. It is a true joy to own. I'm proud of you being willing to say that. So many people think straight line acceleration is all that matters.

Many people have never actually owned a true high horsepower/torque sports car. They think it sounds great because more must be better right? They don't realize that sometimes just the right amount of HP/TQ, weight, handling and looks makes a car much better overall. That's why I bought the RX-8... can't really put it in words, it just feels great to drive. Isn't that what it's all about?

welcome to the club. I also am a new owner of an 'o6 galaxy grey GT 6mt rx-8. I've only gotten to drive mine for about 4 days, before I had to come back to afghanistan. (damn deployment) I've added mazdaspeed lip, side flairs, wing, and fender strakes, to the car and only have pics the wife sent to enjoy them with.
but hey it ups the anticipation for when I get home...

Thanks for the pics!!

I have a black one too--great color and a lot of work to keep clean.

You may want to consider getting some 3M clear plastic put on the hood and front of the car. Mazda paint is as durable as an eggshell. Youll be seeing lots of chips and nicks very soon.

Get rid of the front license plate bracket if you can. Most of us in the states go around w/o a front plate.
