New Car, Mileage on 1st tank is (drumroll please).....

19.17!!

I was pretty excited about my first tank's consumption. Admittedly, I have been driving like my Grandmother, but it sure does ease my mind. Plus, this was with about 75-80% city driving. That's just as good as I was getting with my A4 that I traded in.

I bought my car one day after it was unloaded off the truck, so it's build date is probably pretty recent. And it had 21 miles on it when I drove off the lot.

My first tank (November last year) was about 18.5. Haven't seen better than 13.5 since May. Will hit 5,000 miles this weekend.

Do you have a MT or AT?

I just got the figures on my first tank.18.5mpg.I thought it would be much worse. This is with 90% city driving. The dealer is still jerking me around with this M flash though.

I drove it mostly like a grand ma with shifts no higher than 5k rpm.Never any full throttle either.I hope it gets better, but I doubt it.

I got close to 19 mpg with my first tank too.

of course, since that was during break in, I should expect decent mpg

Damn I got 15.3 MPG on my first tank. 211 total miles. It is looking better on my second. How many miles do you have on the trip when you are at half tank?

I honestly don't remember. I would guess, but it would probably be wrong.

Initial mileage

I have put 6500 on mine and have averaged 22 mpg. Have used 2 qts oil and have first service done at 3200 miles. I don't race but I don't drive like a grandmother either. Very pleased.

I know Rotaries burn oil, but is two quarts per 3000 miles on the high side?

Oil Use.

I think I mis-spoke. I used right at a quart until my first servicing at 3200 miles. I have used one quart since, mostly related to two very long trips, 1400 miles twice. I don't consider my use excessive.

When I bought the car the dealer told me to check oil every two tanks of gas. That led me to believe usage would be somewhat high. Posts on sites like this also gave me the high oil use expectation. It is actually lower than I had expected.

Hope this clarification helps.

Well, I got 15.1 mpg on my first full tank, all city driving, which honestly, ain't surprising ... most shifts in the 4k - 5k range, plenty of strong accelleration runs, etc.

Gang, if you can't afford the gas for this beast, you can't afford the car. This is my fourth rotary car - the gas mileage is comparable to a large V8 engine - it's just the way it is.

I would guess in all highway driving, at 80 mph cruise speed, I'll get 18-19 mpg, which is fine. I'm coming off an Acura 3.2 TLS, which got great mileage if you stayed out of the gas pedal, which I didn't ...

Can't do the time, don't do the crime ... can't afford the gas, then don't push the pedal ...

Well, I have alll the flashes, etc. and I still average around 15-16 mpg after 12k miles. This is in a combination of surburban/urban driving, maybe 50/50. The only way I get 18 mpg in the same driving is to not exceed 4k rpm in any gear. That's so boring...

I just got my 8 on 7/21/04 and I love it so far. I just put my 5th tank of gas in it and I keep up with all the gas consuption specs on my laptop using Microsoft Excel. With this last tank I did the best so far with 20.001 mpg and I drove the tank 262 miles. I do mostly all city driving, but some roads you can get up to 55+. I'm averaging 19mpg so far. Oh ya, I have an AT.

PS: I just wanted to add that I am becoming more and more pleased with my choice of the RX8. I just graduated from college and got my first job and this was the first car I've bought. I was going to buy a chevrolet silverado pickup truck cuz I think they are pretty cool, but they cost just as much as the 8. My friend has one and he gets worse gas mileage than me, so I am very pleased now to know that my purchase wasn't that impractical afterall.

I have about 1900 miles on my 8,
first tank was about 12.5 mpg
current average about 17.5 mpg
50/25/25 highway/highway traffic/city
NO oil (not sure that's entirely good)

I normally get about 18-19mpg under my usual driving circumstances. Getting the MSP04/m-flash tomorrow so I'll see if that changes anything.

Went to willow springs track the other weekend and managed to get around 9.6 mpg for the 100 miles of track use that day, so how you drive it can make a dramatic difference.

I tried babying it for a few tanks, and my milage remained the same (18s) as when I... errr... have fun

The only thing that changes it is when I put lots of cruise-controlled highway miles on a tank.

But for my daily commute (country and suburban roads), it really doesn't matter if I stomp on it from every intersection and hold it 'till redline... or short shift every gear.

I've been averaging 18 mpg in a combination of highway/city driving (70/30%). No grandma stuff either and occasional 8k plus excursions in 2nd or 3rd! By contrast, my BMW 540iA averages 21 mpg under the same conditions and is quicker than the RX 8 too! Two entirely different cars, both a hoot to drive, I love switching!

I agree with your observations. In my normal driving style, I will almost run to the redline in 1st and 2nd and then short shift. The end result is always 15-16 mpg. But as I noted, shifting at 3500-4000 rpm will produce a 2 mpg improvement at the cost of the reason I bought the car...to see 9k rpm, hear the "zing", enjoy the shear fun of the this sports car and its rotary engine. Woulda got a Prius if I was gonna save the planet! :D

I got 23.5mpg on my first tank. I was very easy on it the first 600 miles. It's such a fun car to rev-up. I now have over 12k on it and it has loosened up to give me 27.5mpg. Thats with the cruz set at 65mph for a full tank of 371 miles and the lite came on 13.5gals. If I drive around town I get about 18mpg. This auto is fun and I use shift on the stering wheel alot. Second gear goes to about 80mph....
