I agree: 96 in a 45 is too fast if there are houses nearby (even if they're set back from the street).

If it's in the mountains and all you're risking is your own tail (this means not crossing the center line), then have a party.

I'll second that! The last ticket I received over ten years ago driving a friend's Celica on the way to Las Vegas at about 9 a.,m. in the middle of nowhere. I was doing 70 in the slow lane which is the normal flow of traffic on the way to Vegas for leisurely drivers (speed limit was 65). I came upon a line of cars in the slow lane stretching back about 1/4 mile and no one in the left lane. Of course I slowed down to what I my speedo showed as 65 but was about 1 mph faster than the other cars, so I moved to the left (two lanes on each side of a separated highway) and creeped up to see what was going on. Of course I was suspicious, but nothing seemed strange such as a tanker blocking the highway. :P When I got up near the front, I saw a highway patrol car puttering along at the front of the line of cars. Holy crap! I should have known better!

Hmmm, what do I do? Act guilty and hit my brakes or believe the speedo? He'd surely seen me anyway and being about 3/4 of way up , there was no where to hide or drop back to. Also, I was annoyed at the absurdity of what he was doing. I ended up creeping by him and of course he immediately flashed me. Bam! 66 in a 65.

I pointed out that my speedo showed I was going 65, but he didn't say anything. I still think that was a BS speed trap, but I couldn't realistically fight the ticket because it would have involved driving 120 miles to the courthouse. Also, I'd have to have my friend's speedo tested and certified, then find out if the officer's car's speedo had been recently certiifed. Took the easy way out -- traffic school and fine at the time was under $100 -- and learned a lesson -- the next time I get a ticket on the way to Vegas, I'm going to hang out in the hotel room and by the pool, because it was just the start of a bad gambling weekend!

Cops can write tickets all day long if they really wanted. It's a cash cow for public agencies.

I some what feel your pain but the speed limit is there for a reason. You might be a good driver but that unexpected kid in a bike might not be. Use the highway or the race track for your beeps.

Yeah, I tought I was a good safe driver, until the local neighbors had the city install four sets of speedbumps down my street. The local grandmoms complained about how fast I was going, even though I was going under 35 on a 35 road, and even complained to my parents that they were going to do something about it if I didn't slow down. I paid them no attention, because I thought that I was going at a reasonable speed, until one day on the way home from school I notice four rubber speed bumps mounted to the road. every time I roll over them I see them starring at me with this "I won" kind of look.

awwwie that sux. in my area, they have this slow zone where they criss-cross the road so u have to slow down to get pass. its somewhat like a triple 's' turns (right, left, right left, right .....) but it just made it more tempting to go faster. i normally travel 60km on that road in that area, (60km zone) but now its like a challenge.... i go bout 75km on a 20km zone, and boy is it fun lol. of course, around day time i'd slow down to 30-40, but most ppl use that area as a time trial now.... stupid traffic council... such a bad idea.

HA! That's a pitance! Try Japan... 15,000 JPy for 5-30km/h over. 50,000 JPY for 31km/h~ variable. 100,000 JPY for 50km/h or 60km~. I got caught going 81km in a 50km/h at 12am, no house, no cars... speed trap. 50,000 JPY ticket and license suspended for 30 days, shortened to 1 day because of attendin driving school. If you fall into the last category like my friend who did 126km/h in a 60km/h zone... your license is suspended for 90 days.

Borrow a pickup truck from a friend or family member and drive by them everyday with it revving hard and just over the speed limit. Let's see their faces then. HA!

Adding points to the license of someone whom speeds and gets caught is fine. It's the "fine" part that I have a problem with...

Not to be mean, but.... And just like we tell people on the forum... use the "search" button, here too... just do a web search for "currency conversion" and you'll get a plethora of sites to work it out for you.

Do you know what "those numbers mean" when prices are posted in Canadian dollars or Australian dollars? I bet no. But since it's "dollars" you feel comfortable...even though you don't really understand the value in US dollars. I'm American, and I have no idea what a Canadian dollar, Jamaican Dollar, or Australian Dollar or a British Pound (many carputer sites are in pounds or euros) is worth in US dollars.

Here is a tip for everyone. Most people do a quick estimate by using the 100 JPY / 1 USD exchange rate. It acutally floats between about 105 and 130 recently... hanging around 120-ish.

cops have dual roles, one to stop an actual crime from happening and two, to deter crime. the cop calling your house is preventive. for normal people, if police contact you, you start to think, "are the cops watching me?" and you probably will not be speeding down that road again, if you are normal. the reason why they didn't flat out ticket you is because 1) they have to catch you in the act, and 2) it has to hold up in court. cops hate wasting their time in court.

i have a nice 1/4 mile strech behind my house. i usually come in with 3rd gear beeping. i turn into my street, downshift to second and lo and behold there are cops sitting outside my house. they motion me to pull over and request my info. i refuse. why? both patrol officiers were outside their car. i entered the street and did not chirp the tires. was i going too fast? probably. but they have to catch you with something that will hold up in court such as radar (i know even that can be defeated in court, hence cops fustrations with going to court). one officier proceeded to only speak to me in an accelerated and load voice (screaming). i understand she only did that because 1) she was a smaller-built female (intimedation tatic) and 2) deterrence. do i still whip into my neighborhood at >50 mph? yes, but now i take a route where i can see the whole street

maybe it wasn't even the police that contacted you, maybe it was a neighbor who knows you. either way, who cares, you weren't caught
