Need new car for the wife, RX8?

Hi there Folks

Well as my username suggests I already drive a Nissan 350Z.

Currently I am going to be upgrading the wifes car, so I thought she needs a new car, she doent care as long as its new, and she likes the look of it.

Now I am thinking the RX8 might be a great car to get her?
Pretty sure she will like the look of it.

We dont have any kids and dont plan on getting any. We do have a dog though, so there are so many many cars that will do the trick.

I was just wondering if the RX8 is suited to a woman driver as a daily driver.
I'm also pretty keen to drive the RX8 as Ive heard alot of good, and bad, things about the car.

thanks

fred

I believe that the RX8 is a fine car for anyone. There are several woman on this site that drive the car. For 06, they have engineered the auto model to have more HP than earlier versions. The only problem is, depending on your climate, is the tires. The OEM tires NEED to be changed out if the temperature gets near freezing. The tires are summer tires only and don't work with a dusting of snow.
The car in general is agile, comfortable, stops great and safe.

If you do, you better teach her about all the differences of the rotary engine versus a conventional engine.

Agreed. As long as she takes care of the engine it will be great.

I personally would NOT recommend the 8 for the wife, unless she is an enthusiast and doesn't mind the quirks (Oil checking, heat, warm up, mileage etc). True the 8 is a great car bt it isn't all roses.

I mean I know I would never get the 8 for my wife, just coz she doesn't have the patience for waiting a few mins every morning and I don't see her checking the oil level at all. Atm its me who takes care of her car (BMW 318i 95)

I would reccomend getting her the MX-5 which IMHO is a great car for the money.

OR give her your car and you get the 8 :D

The 8 doesn't really make a good appliance. It's better suited for those who enjoy the drive more than the destination. Buy her a Toyota.

Hmm, I wonder how Danica Patrick would answer that question. The 8 is a good car for anyone who really loves cars. It doesn't matter if it's for a husband or a wife. It's a car for the person willing to do the few extra bits of maintenance the 8 requires. There are a number of women here who are WAY more into cars than a lot of guys I know—I have plenty of buddies who wouldn't want a car that has to have its oil level checked every other fill-up and that can't be turned off when cold. As Socr8tes said, if your wife wants a car that requires about as much care as a microwave oven, I'd get her something else. But not because she's your wife—because she's not really into cars.

I agree with most things said here - if she doesn't want to fool with the car much, get her an MX-5. Besides, women say the MX-5 is CUUUUUUTE :D

If she loves cars, and doesn't mind the quirks - go for it, and never look back!

Or, Mazda6 for the wife. Nice front wheel drive, sporty enough, auto trans, and very economical with the 4 banger. Excellent cruise speed even with the 4 and great stopping power with the all around disc's. Move up to 6 cyl if she wants a bit more zoom-zoom.

My daughter has one and far less headaches for me then if she had an '8.

To satisfy a woman, you need to understand da woman...

Ok, seriously, what does she like?

My wife likes power, but doesn't want to work for it, couldn't do a fast shift at redline even if Prada had a 50% off sale. So forget RX8, S2000 type cars for her, think Mustang, G35.

She also likes to be pampered, luxury items like auto climate, bluetooth tech., mirrors that turn downwards when reversing, seats and wheels that adjust 100 different ways with memory. So again, forget RX8, think BMW 3 series.

If a woman (or men) buys a car simply because it looks cool, that appeal won't last long. Best buy something that has real appeal.

...so first understand da woman, then you can fully fulfill her needs

is the 8 ok for a wife to drive as a daily. Well my wife is suppose to be driving the 02 s2k and im suppose to be driving my 04 8. but for the last 2 yrs i have been driving the s2k and she drives the 8. so i guess she will like the 8 as a daily driver, I know my wife does. And all the maintence is done by me so , if you are willing to pay attention to the 8 needs then you should be set.

Get her a Mini Cooper S. Fun to drive, the women love them and a dog can hop in the back.

Seeing as you already have a two-seater I'd think you would want at least one car that could seat 4 comfortably and have some cargo room (unless you have a truck/SUV or something for that duty). In that case a Mazda 6 wagon is nice or if she likes luxury go with an A4 Avant or Sedan or even an A3 with DSG.

I know the 8 would be way too much maintenance for my wife but then my wife doesn’t like driving anyway.

Forget about buying the 8 for your wife. Too many things to remember:
1. Don't flood the car.
2. Remember to do some spirited driving to blow carbon outta the ports.
3. No power below 5000 rpm.
4. Don't forget to close the read door before closing the front.
5. Don't forget to change to snow tires in October.
6. Don't forget to check the oil.

The list goes on. Quite frankly I have fun remembering all this kinda stuff because my car needs special attention. But to a woman all these things are annoying. I don't bother talking about the physics about the rotary's quirks. Most women don't care. They want the car to turn on when the key is turned, they want the air to blow cold when the A/C is turned on, and I would think that they would prefer that the trunk does not bake it's contents.

The 8 is not for most wives. My wife LOVES getting driven in it but absolutely hates driving it with the stick. And the 8 without a stick is no 8 at all (good bye 9000 rpm).

Buy her a Hummer - nice and safe and has better mileage than the 8

One day, I hope I can grow up and be like Mugatu. I want to lurk around the forums so I can reach out and ATTACK people for asking questions on <gasp> a web forum. Maybe then I can also compensate for my total lack of self-esteem in real life.

Mugatu. Please. Train me.

Oh, and to make some contribution to the thread, as an 8 owner I agree with 416to212's post

WOW, thanks guys.
Amazing posts. Except for MUGATU, but hey we cant all be Aholes

Anyway....reading the thread, I think I have been very selfish considering the RX8 for the wife. It was myself who wanted to be able to drive it some days.

Overall I can see its not suited to a woman driver as a daily driver. We definaely neet back seats as we dotn have a family car, but we dont have kids either, so I dont want to get a wagon/SUV car either.

LOL, I could give her my 350Z, but she battles to pull away smoothly, she either revs too much and pulls away ;like grease lightning, or she stalls the car and makes it jerk so bad I vow never to let her drive it again

So, ok, I think she needs a tamer car. I absolutley love the Mazda 6.
TopGear also loved the car.

But its almost tooo big a family car. Were still pretty young. 29 and 30, I guess I think the MAzda 6 is more like a 40-60 year old car?????

She loves a mini coooper, but man I hate that thing, and I might have to drive the wifes car. So I prefer not looking like a complete doofus.

3 Series, BMW......hmmm, maybe the 1 series would be better, looks alot like the mazda 3?

Well Ive decided on Mazda and the second car, so it prob going to be either a Mazda 3 or the MX-5,.....damn cant be the MX-5 its only 2 seats.

oh no, that leaves the Mazda 3 or 6

We have an Acura TL that is my wife's daily driver that we really enjoy. Has some sportiness to it and a great interior. Gets great mileage for the power it puts out, and the 3.2L engine is very smooth. Smoothest thing I've ever driven other than a rotary. Only negative is FWD, but if you are thinking about a Mazda 3 or 6 then that doesn't exclude it.

350Z, my first suggestion is not to refer to her as "the wife". How about "my wife". If she loves to drive, buy an RX8.

Not a good choice for the wife as a daily driver IMO. The 8 is more of a hobby than just a vehicle to get you from point A to point B. She would probably never clean the brake dust off of the front wheels either.

I agree not saying that your wife is one of them, but some women just don't know how to take care of a car, and adding a rotary engine to that picture isn't going to be pretty, but if your wife is good with maintaining things then get her the MT 8..... otherwise buy her the BMW 3 Series..... or the mercedes C230 Supercharged Sports Compressor!

bmw 3 series

MB 230 Supercharged sports compressor
