My tachometer is a speedometer

in 3rd gear.

So I just bought a 04 GT recently and I noticed in 3rd gear I get a perfect 1K RPM per 1 MPH.

Is this by design or just a coincidence?

also, 6th gear rpm is pretty close to 1/2 the speed (in mph).
ie, 60mph is at ~3k rpm.

I have noticed a similar phenomenon. When I go 20 MPH the trees go by at half the pace they do when I go 40MPH. Is this by design or are these special trees?

That's like vinyl vs CDs.

I'll take vinyl, thanks.

lol, It is all down to the gearing of the transmission. The transmission gear are expressed as number ratio. A higher number means your intput shaft for your transmission is spinning slower then your output shaft resulting in more torque and vice versa for speed. When the ratio is or is near to 1.00 that means that both shafts are spinning at almost the speed hence the speedometer and tacho moving together. Cause they are spinning at almost the same relative rate.

The 1.00 ratio is usually on the higher gears , 4th or 5th for the manuals. Yours happens at 3rd gear leading me to believe you have a 4AT Rx 8.

ps; You really should have gotten a Manual ..haha.. :D

nope. he's talking about the 6sp MT. 5th is the 1.00 gear, but the 1/10 occurence he is referring to happens in 3rd. you are forgetting about the final drive and the tire diameter. and since you obviously have a 6MT, you should pay a little attention sometime

btw, 3rd is 1.645

Oh yeah? I tried that, and it took me like 4 times as long to get home. Of course that's only because the cop didn't appreciate my mathematical ingenuity.

stupid digital speedo on the 8 has made me forget how to use the analog speedo on normal cars when driving; now when i drive normal cars, if there's a tach, that's what i look at when driving, it's weird lol
