My rx8 is making a constant clicking noise!

I noticed an odd constant clicking noise that clicks pretty similar to the idle coming from the alternator/engine/intake area.. Can anybody help identify the problem it's killing me..

I recorded it for you to also hear it.

2004 Rx8 clicking noise? - YouTube

Others can correct me if I'm wrong but that sounds like your SSV (secondary shutter valve).

I just corrected the same issue by taking off the upper intake manifold and drenching the valve in mazda engine cleaner while opening/closing the valve with a mightyvac.

Search for SSV and you'll find a few DIYs on removal and how to fix the problem. Easiest thing you can try is going on a long drive with lots of high rev range action to try and un-gunk the valve.

It's hard to tell from the video but to me it sounds exactly like my SSV problem did.

The part that bothers me though is that the sound should be on the opposite side though. You should hear the clicking sound on the passengers side where the upper intake manifold is if it was the SSV.

Also, is this sound also apparent on start-up, or also once it gets warm?

Thank you for the reply

It seems to just be there when warm idling. I will have to start the car when it's cold to check. I will try the higher revving to try and unclogging it and I will get back to you. Fingers crossed!

No Matter what

Just started my car when cold, and my solution is that it clicks whether it is cold or warm!

It happens to me a couple of times, but it goes away though. I thought it sounded like the belts from the alternator, but i'm not sure...did i say it goes away though.

99% sure it's your SSV. You can see if its stuck easy.

And monchie, the sound you're talking about, it's slower and quieter than this right? I have the same noise going on, it sounds like a belt, pulley, or alternator. Do you have any idea what it is? I'm stuck..

I'm not really sure either, the sound sounds like a "click click" sound, but it goes away though...

I will wait a little.

I will wait it out for a week or so to see if it goes away and let you guys know. It just bugs me a lot to hear a noise like that haha.

Eric you could try the method I posted above. It doesnt involve taking out the SSV so you dont have to worry about draining the coolant. you just need to take off the upper intake manifold and spray onto the SSV while using a vacuum pump to spin the valve.

It took me a couple hours but that's only because it was my first time taking off the UIM so i dropped screws, took off wrong hoses at first, etc.

I'm sure you could probably do it within an hour. And my noise completely went away after doing it.

The next morning

I started my 8 this morning and the noise wasn't there. I will let you know what happens after it warms up!

hm, i might do that.

what cleaner did you use? engine cleaner? any more specific??

i have not taken my UIM off either. Doesnt seem that difficult especially since i dont have the oem airbox.

When it gets warmer outside i will try this.

my 8 makes so many noises im started to get annoyed... the ssv ticking, my clutch release bearing is grinding in neutral and the black plastic piece where the seatbelt ties into started rattling.. ugh.

I used the zoom power engine cleaner. I got it online for about $20.00. Smells AWFUL, make sure to use a gas mask or something.

Throttle body has to come off, then there are a few bolts holding the UIM down, 2 bolts near the oil filler neck, 3 on top of the manifold. There are also a few hoses, clips, etc that need to come off as well as the PITA 3 clips on the back of the UIM.

The guy who was helping me over skype though was done in like 45 minutes. '

I empathize with you on the rattling. So far I only have the tranny clicking in neutral and a glove box rattle. But getting the SSV ticking out of the way was a big aesthetic improvement for when I roll down my windows. If I ever went through a drive through at a fast food place (you know how those walls amplify all those sounds), may god have mercy on your soul if you were in the passenger seat.

You said it only happens when warm? Did you check the right radiator fan (driver side)? There is a piece of metal that sometimes loosens up and goes down, making contact with one of the blades, causing the clicking.

cool! sounds easy.

the ticking doesnt bother me, only when i start the car in the morning and im waiting for it to warm up for a few minutes.

HOWEVER.. the throwout bearing / release bearing is what makes me pull my hair out.

not my video, but you get the idea. same noise.

also FYI... the noise is not normal.... youtuber comments are the dumbest.

Just get a bottle of seafoam; you don't need Mazda's special cleaner. Its essentially the same thing for more money.

the ssv video in the main ssv thread said i had to stuff a rag into the port so that the engine doesnt have a hard time firing up after i clean the ssv.

do i have to do this with this method?

I have a 2007 AT and my car does this only when the engine is warm, AC on and in Drive or Reverse. It only ticks loudly when the RPM drops, say around 810 RPM. When in Park or Neutral (900RPM) it doesn't tick loudly. It's there, but you can't hear it unless you listen to it carefully. The lower the RPM, the louder it gets. Rev it and it goes away. Comes back when it idles.

Would cleaning this really make it go way? I've read that people who have cleaned their SSVs that doesn't tick, start ticking AFTER they've cleaned it

So I have a question, I'm new with RX8's, had a couple of miata's in the past. Learned engines are completely different. So, i have noticed that when I start my car (whether cold or warm) a rattling or clicking noise, would anyone happen to know what that would be? After it warms up, noise disappears and then I do the 10sec rev and everything is good. Is this something I need to worry about, oh and the check engine light came on... I need to get it scanned to see the possible problem..
Anyone? It's driving me but i love my car
