The estimate was basically for what the shop considered a fully prepped StarMazda build and I did not use their services. Builder with was in no way good at listening to customer needs, explaining services performed or keeping up with communications. On top of that, $20k for 200hp is silly, which is why I'll probably just throw in a basic mazda reman when the time comes.

There was some good margin in that number. Sounds like they didn't want to do it... Business must have been really good then. Call 'em back now and get a 65% discount!

^^Funny that you’re so attuned to my noise-signal ratio and openly smear me about it any chance you see the cheap opportunity to pile on, but are blind and deaf to your own. Stop pretending to be something you’re not. Did you ever buy and run one? We all know the answer.

I strongly recommend that anyone serious about Renesis engines read the first post in the link below and burn it into their memory bank. Nobody knows the ins and outs of the Renesis better than this man:

there are gold nuggets like this on the forum, but unfortunately it’s often lost in a flood of garbage aka the doctrine of men, who sincerely strive for your attention, but inadvertently deceive you from the truth. It’s not the fleshly wolf in sheep’s clothing; the one that knows he’s a wolf, and is intentionally in sheep’s clothing for that very purpose, that you should worry about. They’re easier to discern.

No it’s the spiritual wolf in sheep’s clothing you need to take heed of; the one that doesn’t know he’s a wolf, or that he’s in sheep’s clothing. Because he doesn’t comprehend the truth about himself any more than other things he attempts to inadvertently lead others in. Yet he sincerely and wholly believes he has the understanding of the truth, when in fact he does not. Therein is the great power of his deception to mislead and confuse others. The blind leading the blind, and into the ditch/pit they all go …

HA! Disagreeing with you is not smearing. Believe me, I have not yet begun to smear. That's not what I'm here for.

In the other string I was actually defending you, to a small extent. And I never claimed to own/run a high dollar engine built by a race shop. Probably never will either. Nor do I name-drop. Not my thing.

If you want to compare Johnsons, I'm not playing. It's always fruitless. I have enough knowledge/experience with mechanics to know I don't know (and actually don't need to know) everything.

I think your prickly-ness speaks to your insecurity, friend. It's also obvious to many (most) by now.

So, take a breather.

On Facebook there's a guy with 600,000 mile RX-8. He's on his fourth engine which happens to be a Pettit engine with 122,000 miles. Unfortunately he couldn't provide any compression numbers but I'll try reaching back out to him for any history.
That would be me. I picked up my car and drove it home to Columbia Missouri. Limited RPM to 4K for the first 500 miles. Changed oil at 500. Kept it under 6k for the next 500 miles and changed the oil again. Then drove like normal and changed oil every 3K. Currently have 130K miles on the engine. Did a compression check at 100K. Don't remember the exact numbers but they were lower than I had hoped (met Mazdas replacement guidlines) since I am premixing with this engine for the first time. Still starts hot.

Thank you for the information! I really hope this engine holds together as well as yours.

The engine now has about 10,000 miles on it and the oil rings must be bad, the car sat for a month and upon startup huge amounts of blue smoke filled my garage.

Still never heard back from anyone at Petitt since I left them messages almost a year ago, these guys are terrible.

Well what happens when you have that low of compression is that you get excessive blowby on the oil rings. Eventually they cook and get stuck in the rotors.

i had found when i used the atkins one piece corner seals that i had ~70psi on the rebuild. Which led to another rebuild. Just going to mazda seals I went up to 90-100psi on used irons and rotors.

Updated the initial post; oil rings are gone. The car sat for three months but now nothing but blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. What a waste of money for a 100% street-driven 10,000-ish mile engine.

So buyer beware with Pettit.

I'd like to link your experience in the Rebuilder's Sticky if you don't mind.
I think it would be a relevant addition.

Or, feel free to post it yourself with any comments, and I'll note it in the header by their listing.
Thanks.

I linked it already, but feel free to vent there.

Hey guys I'm looking to bounce an idea off you; since the oil rings are toast are there any beefier/more heat-resistant seals out there? Maybe Pettit didn't use Mazda seals or improperly installed them? I'm throwing around the idea of opening the engine and replacing oil seals but don't want to keep throwing money at this engine. If I could get another ~15k miles I'd be good and can move on to another engine. Just resealing the keg is a few hundred bucks but I'd rather put that money towards the next engine.

Seeing my RX-8 sitting in the corner of my shop is getting to me. It would be 2-3 years before I could replace this engine.

I don't believe there's any alternatives besides OEM Mazda for oil control rings. They might've been improperly installed.

Yeah I couldn't find any online either, figured it was worth a shot.
