I really don't want to take this into a Z -vs- 8 thread, BUT...
In all fairness, both have their attributes.
I actually like the way the Z looks, and the new ones have improved interiors. They also have gobs of torque and a wicked exhaust note, IMO.
On the downside, they do not handle nearly as well as the 8, and even though the 8 out handles them in spades, the 8 is a more comfortable daily driver (the Z's ride is nothing short of punishing on truly bad roads) - neat trick that, Mazda.
Plus, I'd have to give a big + to Mazda as the 8 is much more usable car, with a can 'make do' backseat, better interior trim (still), and much better steering feedback (without an ounce of harshness or kickback, I might add).
The Z does manage to outmuscle the 8 in torque, and in straight line performance, as it has a respectable HP advantage, while it achieves better fuel economy.
Both are good cars. Okay, I am biased, after having driven both many times - I think the Z is a good car, and the 8 is an excellent car.
The best attribute of the Z is the Nissan 6 - it's a damn good motor.
The best attribute of the 8 is the handling/steering 'Zen,' while achieving great ride comfort for a sports car.
Both are very good.

Buy the damn 8 already! Don't let it go to some unappreciative **** that doesn't take care of it, thinks it has a V6, and eventually wrecks it.
For just dollars a day, you can make a difference. You can help rescue an 8 that desperately needs your help. Please... make the call now 1-800-BUY-RX8S.

The ignition issue is no big deal. You can get all 4 coils brand new for under $150 all day long. Sparkplugs are high (about $75 a set) but only need replaced every 20k or so.
The only other failures on the car are the cat converter and the engine itself. The engines are extended warrantied 8y/100k miles. Most of the engines are doing fine, but there is a large percentage of them being replaced as well (compared to other cars). There are a couple of things you can do to extend the life of your engine, including premixing 2 cycle in the gas for additional seal lubrication. I am a rotary builder of 8 years and I do this religiously on my rx8 and rx7 so that should tell you something.
The 8 is the SMOOTHEST driving sportscar you have ever been in, I'd almost guarantee it. I have a yukon denali and a 460rwhp rx7, and have had MANY other vehicles, and never have I driven anything as overall smooth and enjoyable as the 8. Now it is no powerhouse...definitely a nimble and responsive car. And when you drive it for a while, it will feel fast. But if you ever get into any sort of speed contest you will probably get your feelings hurt, or at least disappointed a little bit that you can't pull away from whatever else it is. This is one of the cars that feels like it has 300hp but only has 230.

just get the 8 and you will love it! there is only a high chance of flood if you shut the car off before its warmed up. I have had my white 8 for 3 years already with 40k and never flooded once. before that i had a silver 8 for another year and a half and also never flooded once either. dont worry you are safe.

I love the 8, had it flood on me once and that was cuz my mom went and moved teh car 10ft while I was in Florida visiting my dad. I drive it as a DD, it's an '04 bought in Nov of '06 with 15,005 miles on her. She is now at 99,500 miles and I've only had basic maintenance to do. As a testament to the engine and all, I also have an RX-7 with 238k miles on it and haven't had any issues other then maintenance also, and it's a 1983 model.

You need to post in the 100,000 mile thread if you haven't already. Congrats.

I've done a preemptive post, I plan to take pix as she hits 99999 and then 100000 and post it all up. As well as some shots showing how clean she has stayed even being driven through the winters. The car has been just as I expect from my experience with 1st gens, and that is beautiful.

I'm a little late to the party but, if your still hesitant about the 8 try "The little things" thread. If after all 40 pages your not excited, well... you'll need more help than we can give. lol

I'll make it easy for you. You'll pay about $14,000 for this car...
Once I figured out I could afford an RX-8 (which was in my dreamcar top 5) I paid $70,000 to get a 2004 Winning blue imported from the US (because of options and colors and slightly cheaper than buying one here).
Using it I pay $400 a month for the loan which is on 40% of the car value, I fill the car up with gas that cost almost 7 dollars per gallon and I pay $1500 a year in insurance for the car. I also top it off now and then with 5W30 mineral oil that costs $70 per quart.
Is it worth it? Yes. **** everything else, buy an 8! It looks miles better than that Z. It's a drivers car, it makes you feel special every day
