My New (to me) RX-8

So it came down to two RX8s: a white GT with sand leather and a black GT with black and red leather.

The white GT was priced at $15,958 and they weren't moving. It had the sand interior, which I thought was pretty classy. It had four like-new tires but the front two didn't match the rear two and didn't even match each other, so I was going to have to get at least one new tire so that the fronts actually matched. It only had around 15k on the odometer and had about 10 months left on the b2b warranty. It was missing the floor mats. It was missing the "spare tire" kit. It was going to need a new battery soon. It drove nicely enough, though it was hard to tell because the mismatched front tires made for some squirrelly handling. It also didn't have a spoiler, which was something I wanted.

The black GT was priced at $14,958 and they weren't moving either. Interestingly, the dealership (a non-Mazda dealer) thought they had a sport. I had to explain to them it was a GT. They had no idea. It had the black and red interior, which I thought matched the personality of the car. It had around 28,950 on the odometer and the b2b warranty had expired. It had one new tire and three nearly bald ones, so I was going to have to get 3 new tires. It needed nothing else. Floor mats were there; spare tire kit was there. And it had a spoiler.

So which one did I end up with?

These were just the initial "I just got her" pics; I'll take better pics later.

Yeah, I think that might be because of the fog we had when I took the pic this morning.

Spare Tire Kit is optional. (wasn't ever standard on any trims). Same goes for the rear spoiler. Congrats on the new ride. Im a big fan of the two tone leather. You rarely see them on cars anymore except of course high end cars.

Thanks, everyone. Just finished up my first mod. It's the same first mod I always do - hardwired V1 with the remote display. I put the remote display in the ash tray as I don't smoke. I like it there because I can close the cover and nobody knows it's even there.

Congrats and great to see pics. Did you have to eat the cost of new tires or did they work with you?

Now I can go get that white one.

I wouldn't buy anything that the previous owner couldn't even match the tires on one end of the car if not all 4. Would make me wonder what else they skimped on...

Congrats - looks sweet.

Depending on the year of the car, the B2B warranty was 4/48 or 3/36; a 5/60 for the drivetrain and a 8/100 for the engine core.

We met in the middle, essentially. New tires were $500 and I was able to get another $250 out of them.

You don't want that white one. Two front tires that match neither each other nor the rears? REALLY?

I don't know who put those tires on. I actually found out after I'd walked away that the white one had been a repo car. That explains why there were no floormats or flat tire kit; I'm guessing the PO looted the car as much as possible before the bank came and took it away.

I don't know of any car with a 60k b2b warranty. Mazda had a 4/48k b2b warranty on all cars through 2006. In 2007 they switched over to a 3/36k b2b warranty.

A repo car...no wonder the tires didn't match. Wonder if they did any maintenance on the car, but then again it didn't have many miles.

I like WWP and the sand interior is really sweet.

Glad you were able to get some dollars off them for the tires. Are you getting the Continentals?

I must admit I did like the white/sand color combination. But the squirrelly handling left me cold. I know it was because of the mismatched front tires but it gave me a bad feeling about the car. Also, needing two new front tires at 15,000 miles? That didn't jibe well with me. Add to that the fact that there was crap missing from the car and it was not worth going after for me. Not unless I could've gotten a really good deal on it.

The black GT had one good tire - a Yokohama YK520 - so I just got three more to match it. I've had good experiences with Yokohama tires so I didn't mind having to get those. They should get me through a couple years and I'll re-assess after that.

I've never owned a white car and while this one was sharp it just wasn't calling to me as much as the black one.

I added the XCarLink iPod adapter tonight. It's pretty slick. In the Miata I just used a hardwired FM modulator but for the RX I wanted to go all out.

Here's something odd I forgot to mention: in the glove box were two brand new RE7C-L spark plugs. No trailing plugs; just the leading. I don't know if someone was planning on changing out the plugs or what. It will save me $40 here in a few weeks when I do the 30k service on it, though!

^ Don't forget to change out the coils. I did. So now I need to do it when my clutch gets replaced.
