Might this be a ploy by the insurance company to prevent you from making the claim?

I say file a claim. Remember you are paying them a premium for just this situation. You should have no more to pay than your $500 deductible. If they raise your rates, then get a new insurance company. Since there is no "accident," the next company should not know about the previous company's payout.

anyway... welcome to the RX8Club! Beautiful tanks. bud of mine does that for a hobby as well and has made some incredible setups. he's spent more on the tanks than i did on my car! lol

I'd ask your insurance speficially why they are raising your rates. put them on the spot and find out exactly why they are bending you over a barrel... that just doesn't make any sense unless you've had several previous claims, etc. I've had body work done to two previous cars i owned and my insurance covered both (minus the deductable of course) and neither time was my fault for the damage and neither time caused my rates to go up.

if they still wont be forgiving on the rate, tell them to fark off and go with someone else. I am with State Farm (19 years now) and would never switch. They've treated me very well.

yeah, id just file the claim, and call them up and let them know that if they hike the rates on you for something you had no control over, youll just find another company. Sometimes the threat of leaving keeps them in line.
