My first Oil Change!

Today I got my first oil change. I went to the dealership where i baught my 8. I asked the lady behind the counter what kind of oil they are going to use. She said whatever its a matter of preference so i told her 5-20 non- synthetic . It went pretty quick only waited about 30mins without my baby, but I think they over filled the oil. when i checked the oil it looks like its way over the markings on the dipstick. Ive read other threads of the dealership overfilling the 8. Is this really serious can it cause damage?? I think ive read somewhere that some request the dealer to drain the excess oil and others dont worry about it. The dealership also washed my car this is the first time i got an oil change and a car wash...

Let't not start another syn v non-syn oil thread.

Try search--its been discussed before. Take it back or drain yourself.

We purposefully overfill all of our RX-8s. The Rotary engine burns so much oil, that it's really not going to damage anything. It won't take too long to go through the excess.

having too much oil can cause it to flow up into your intake tube

Ok, so I guess I could have specified how much more we put in... no more than an extra inch up the stick. Since all of our engines are running at >5500 RPMs a large majority of their run time... we like to put a little extra in.

So yes... if it is really overfilled, you could cause damage. But a small amount isn't anything to worry about.

umm, who is "WE" and what dealership are you talking about. because I call BULLSHIT on you're back track saying, "Oh, well, I overstated, its really only an inch over." Uninformed lot-monkeys like yourself are why people have to get in warranty fights with Mazda.

I'm not at all starting any syn v. conventional. Simply asking why, if she took it to the dealer to do anyway, she made the specific choice she did. Nor did I anywhere say her choice was wrong or state my opinion on that matter. Was a simple question.

lady behind the counter? the receptionist? next time ask for a technician or even the service writer who writes your work order

over filling, considering the 8 doesn't have a crank to whip and airate over filled oil like a piston engine, it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

when a new car is purchased from a dealership, a free carwash is courtesy unless you ask them not to do it.

if it's over-filled the oil can back up into your intake which is bad news. I would drain some.
They shouldn't charge you if you take it back to the stealership for their own mistake

I think that they overfill it when they use the bulk oil from the pumps (Motorcraft stuff)....

I then asked them to fill her up with Mazda bottled oil, and it's been 2 times for an oil change and have not overfilled her since...

Unlike a piston engine where the crankshaft is exposed to the oil in the pan, a rotary will not be hurt by overfilling.
