Is my cat failing?

Recently i've been hearing a strange rattling sound coming from the car when I downshift to 2nd and punch it to pass someone in traffic or for just fun. the rattling becomes quite noticable around 5-7k rpms. I tried locating the sound and noticed it was coming from underneath the car and it suprised me when i heard it because it was actually very loud. Another thing I noticed was that my car seems to backfire more (im on a stock exhaust) and there is a very heavy smell of fumes.

I dont feel any loss of power but I do think it is the CAT, can anyone confirm this is you have had similar issues?

You have to be more specific. If rattle means metal clinging its the heat shield.

I dont know how to be more specific, When I down shift to 2nd and punch it i hear a raddling sound, I hear it when in neutral too which is how I checked it today from where it is coming from. Its definately under the car and it gives off a heavy gas smell. The exhaust is also "popping" alot more than it did before.

I hear it in 1st and neutral, but 2nd is the easiest to notice, I dont hear it in 3rd because i dont pass in third so no need to go WOT, i pass in 2nd because its easier to accellerate so i hear it there the most since in first when I go WOT its only for a bit then I shift to 2nd.

^If you drive it hard, does the cat start glowing red like molten metal?

If you pet it, does it growl or purr?

If it barks, you're doing it wrong.
